If you’re stuck in the office instead, German law doesn't grant you Hitzefrei. It does, however, make your employer responsible once it hits 30°C. See your rights here

3 bits of news

The EU just banned airlines from charging for hand luggage

The European Parliament has approved a ban on hand luggage fees for EU flights, likely taking effect from 2027. Passengers will have the right to bring a personal bag up to 40x30x15cm and a carry-on up to 7kg on board FREE of charge.

This good news comes with one catch: airlines can still set their own prices. Which means base ticket prices could quietly rise to make up the difference. So less of a fee ban, more of a fee shuffle.

The rules also maintain delay compensation at €250 to €600 depending on flight distance and require airlines to seat children under 14 next to their accompanying adult at no extra cost. The same goes for passengers with disabilities and pregnant women.

SWM is asking Munich to use less water this week

Temperatures around 30°C are expected to last through the weekend and Munich's public utilities SWM are asking residents to use drinking water sparingly. Even a stable supply feels the strain when heat and drought hit at the same time.

The requests are straightforward: skip watering the garden or lawn for now, don't fill pools or paddling pools, and hold off on washing the car. Drink plenty of water yourself – just don't run the tap while you do it.

For longer-term tips on cutting water use at home, SWM has a full guide covering everything from shower habits to washing machine settings. Small changes add up, especially during a heatwave.

900 locations worldwide, zero in Munich – until now

Oakberry, a Brazilian lifestyle brand with over 900 locations in 45 countries, is coming to Munich. It's opening on the ground floor of The Stack – a new office building we have previously written about on Goethestraße in Ludwigsvorstadt. Opening is planned for autumn 2026.

The concept is simple: açaí bowls and smoothies, freshly prepared. Açaí is a dark purple berry from the Brazilian Amazon, pureed and served with fruit, granola, and toppings. It started in Brazil's surf and sports scene and has since gone global as a health food staple.

It already has locations on the Champs-Élysées in Paris and Bond Street in London. Munich is next. Whether it lives up to the hype is something to find out in autumn.
