How Germans are spending their free time in 2024

According to the latest Leisure Monitor report conducted by the BAT Foundation, it’s all about the digital life, relaxation and a dash of adventure—when we can tear ourselves away from our screens, that is.

The Internet reigns supreme as the number one leisure activity, with 97% of people logging on at least once a week.

When we do venture out of our homes, we're increasingly opting for experiences that are a bit more exciting than your average Sunday drive. Day trips, weekend getaways and visits to restaurants and flea markets are all on the rise. But some traditional activities, like cruising around aimlessly or popping by the local pub, are losing their charm.

But in a world where we’re spending more time in front of screens, there's a noticeable uptick in the desire to get moving. Fortunately, walking, jogging and hitting the gym are becoming leisure time staples, doubling in popularity over the past decade.

Oktoberfest security gets a boost

Photo by Walter Martin on Unsplash

The 2024 Oktoberfest is just around the corner and while you’re dusting off your lederhosen, Munich's officials are tightening security to ensure everyone has a safe and festive time. In light of recent events in Solingen, Mayor Reiter announced enhanced security measures, which means bag checks will be more thorough, and yes, the lines might be a tad longer.

But hey, isn’t a little extra wait worth the peace of mind?

Wiesn chief Clemens Baumgärtner is on top of it, promising that their already detailed safety plan is getting an extra layer of scrutiny. With 50 video cameras keeping watch and strict rules against bringing knives, glass bottles or backpacks onto the Theresienwiese, you can focus on what really matters—enjoying the Bier and the Bratwurst.

Bike DIY repair shop

DENAGO HUNTING 1 EMTB MOUNTAIN EBIKE can assemble a basket and put all my luggage on the basket when camping. Lighten the burden for me.

Got a bike that’s seen better days? It could be a wobbly wheel or brakes that barely brake. The ADFC, Munich’s self-help repair shop is here to help you bring your trusty steed back to life.

But here’s the twist—you do the work, with a bit of expert guidance, of course.

Every Thursday evening, the ADFC team opens up their well-equipped workshop in Ludwigsvorstadt. From replacing spokes to adjusting gears, they've got the tools—and the know-how—to help you get your ride back in tip-top shape.

And if you're the kind who likes to skip the line, make sure to register in advance for a little VIP treatment.

Just remember, this isn’t your typical drop-off service. You’ll get your hands dirty, but in return, you’ll leave with a perfectly tuned bike—and maybe even some newfound mechanical skills.

Pro tip: Don’t order parts online without checking with these experts first. There is nothing worse than a shiny new part that doesn’t fit. Besides, if you’re missing a small piece, they’ve got spares on hand for a small fee.
