Waste-free at Gärtnerplatz

Get ready to clean up your act.
For three weeks in September, the Gärtnerplatzviertel is transforming into Munich’s very own “Waste-Free Mile,” and it’s packed with activities that make eco-friendliness fun.
The events kick off on Saturday, September 7 with a neighborhood clean-up, followed by a day filled with hands-on workshops and information about waste reduction. You can even pick up a pocket ashtray (because littering is so 1999).
Plus, don’t miss the mobile second-hand market at the Klenzemarkt the following week on Saturday, September 14—perfect for finding treasures while keeping your eco-conscience clear.
Oh, and did we mention live music and a wishing tree?
There’s also a clothing swap party, the return of the Garbage Championship (yes, you read that right), and a nibble party where rescued food is transformed into a gourmet meal.

AfD's major gains
In the Saxony state elections this week, the CDU held on by a thread, with vote projections showing they landed between 31.5% and 31.8%. Hot on their heels was the AfD, who grabbed between 30.8% and 31.4%.
Meanwhile, things didn’t go as smoothly for the Left Party, especially in Thuringia, where their vote share plummeted from 31% to 12.9%. In Saxony, they even fell below the 5% threshold. The Greens also took a hit, but managed to hang on with 5.2%.
All in all, it’s clear that the political landscape is shifting—fast.
Meanwhile, the economic scene in eastern Germany is relying more and more on foreign workers. According to a recent study, a whopping 403,000 foreign workers were employed in the region in 2023—an increase of 173,000 over the past five years.
These workers are essential, contributing 24.6 billion euros to the economy and make up about 5.8% of the total economic output in the area. Most of these workers come from Poland, Czechia, Romania, and Ukraine, filling critical jobs in sectors like construction and housing.

1 new restaurant/café to try
Ukiyo
Looking for some sushi that’s fancy enough to make you feel like you’re in downtown Tokyo but close enough that you don’t need a plane ticket?
Nestled on Rumfordstraße, Ukiyo is a cozy Japanese spot that serves up high-quality fish that’s as fresh as it gets—and yeah, you’ll pay for it. Let’s just say the phrase “really, really expensive” was thrown around.
The food? It’s top-tier: The sashimi is a must.
The service? Courteous and happy to take special requests (a rarity in Munich).
Ukiyo’s interior is sleek and elegant, perfect for an upscale dining experience. Just keep in mind, it’s a small space, so it could get a little loud when the place fills up. And yes, those tables might feel a bit tight if you go wild with the orders.
