Black slopes in 4 weekends

So, what happens when someone who grew up in the desert and can’t even ride a bike decides to learn skiing one month after moving to Germany? Apparently, they master a black slope in just four weekends!

That’s right. After joining Parallel Skiing (an English speaking ski course) run by the ever-enthusiastic Ken Lawer, I (Arlene) found myself gliding down the steepest of slopes. I’m still not sure why people love lugging heavy boots and skis up a mountain, wrapped in multiple layers, but hey, I’ve been going skiing every year since.

For around €250-€350 per weekend (price not adjusted for current inflation), you get everything—skis, training, a ski pass, accommodation, memories, stories, bragging rights for winning board games and even learn what “camera man” and “tin man” mean.

Plus, did I mention the après-ski parties? You’ll make friends from all over the world, bonding over shared accomplishments (and wipeouts) on the slopes. Oh, and, you will wipe out. My personal highlight? Sliding down the slope while my instructor kindly retrieved my runaway skis and poles.

And trust me, all the instructors are INCREDIBLE. Special shoutout to Roy, the “ski therapist” (he’s my favorite, though he doesn't believe it). Their unique technique involves learning on short skis that help you overcome your fear so you can tackle the red slopes in no time—and maybe even the black ones  if you're feeling brave.

These guys run the show from early January through late February, guiding first-timers (and terrified people like me) through three or four weekends of ski training. But act now: sign ups for the coming winter fill up fast and close this month.

Give it a go and tell me you didn't have fun.

Germany tightens border security

Starting next week, Germany will reintroduce temporary border checks at all its land borders, including with France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Denmark.

Why?

It’s all part of an effort to limit illegal migration and tighten up internal security. So if you're crossing the border between now and March, be sure to have your documents ready—you wouldn’t want to be that person who holds up the line, would you?

Border controls have already been in place at Germany’s borders with Poland, Austria and Switzerland since 2023, and it’s been pretty effective—more than 30,000 people have been turned away for lacking valid entry documents.

World’s Best Beer? It’s Bavarian

Once again, Bavarian breweries have proven that when it comes to beer, they’re pretty much unstoppable.

At the 2024 World Beer Awards, held last month in London, more than 3,200 beers from 50 countries battled it out—and Bavarian brews walked away with some serious bragging rights.

The highlight? Weihenstephaner’s Hefeweißbier Dunkel was crowned the World’s Best Wheat Beer.

But that’s not all—Herrnbräu from Ingolstadt snagged the title of World’s Best Bavarian Style Hefeweiß and Franziskaner’s Kristallklar Weissbier won big too.

In the stout and porter world, Zapfenduster from Bamberg’s Weiherer brewery claimed the World’s Best title. And if you’re more of a lager fan, Bavaria’s got you covered there too. Ayinger’s Celebrator Doppelbock took home the win for the World’s Strongest Lager, while ABK's Edelbier is now officially the World’s Best Oktoberfest Beer & Märzen.

So, if you needed an excuse to crack open a cold one, this is it. Prost!

Munich’s Critical Mass Movement

On the last Friday of the month, something pretty special happens on Munich’s streets—300+ cyclists gather, crank up the tunes and ride through the city, even running red lights (legally, of course).

This is Critical Mass, a worldwide movement where, for a brief moment, bikes outnumber cars and cyclists own the road. It all starts around 6:30pm at Max Joseph Platz, where you’ll see everything from high-wheelers to sound-blasting boom boxes on bikes.

The idea? Make enough noise—and form enough of a crowd—so cars can’t ignore you. And the best part? As long as the first rider crosses a green light, everyone else can roll right through, even if the light changes.

Thanks to German road rules, if you’ve got at least 16 cyclists riding together, you’re considered a closed group, meaning you get to ride two-by-two and take up the lane—no squeezing to the side for cars.

The police help manage traffic, making sure the group stays safe and cars know what’s up.

The ride ends in front of the Bavaria statue so bring some fun snacks for the food-sharing party too.
