3 bits of news
S-Bahn summer shake-up
Photo by Finn Mund on Unsplash
If you thought summer was all sunshine and relaxation, think again—especially if you’re one of the 800,000 daily passengers on Munich’s S-Bahns. As the city gets busy with construction, your commute might need a bit of extra planning (and patience).
During the summer holidays, Deutsche Bahn is bundling several construction projects across the S-Bahn network. This means timetable changes, replacement buses, and perhaps a few more minutes of “me time” as you wait for your train.
The outer branches aren’t spared either. Expect disruptions on the S1, S3, S4/S6 East, and S7 lines throughout August and into September.
Puzzle your way through Munich

It’s that time of year again when we swap our Netflix binges for something a bit more active—and let’s be honest, a lot more fun. The MVV City Rally is back, and this year’s edition (in German) promises to be a delightful mix of brain teasers and scenic strolls through some of Munich’s most interesting corners.
This year’s rally takes you on a journey through two fascinating neighborhoods: Obergiesing and the stretch from Westfriedhof to Taxisgarten.
No need to worry about complicated downloads or printing out maps—just grab your smartphone and start solving right away. As you answer each question, you’ll know immediately if you’ve hit the nail on the head or if you’re way off base.
The rally is perfect for kids, teens, adults and anyone in between. Each route is designed to be completed in about an hour—though feel free to take your time, especially if you need a break for coffee or a quick snack. And here’s a pro tip: You can even split the rally over two days if you’re not in the mood to solve it all in one go.

Eisbach swimming with a side of caution
We asked AI to create Maria Einsidelbach's image
When summer hits Munich, the locals know exactly where to go for a splash of fun—to the Eisbach in the Englischer Garten. Here you will find kids plunging into the ice-cold water, drifting a few hundred meters to the Tivoli Bridge, and hopping on the tram back to the start, soaking wet and giggling.
But hold on to your floaties, because there's more you need to know before you dive in.
Swimming in the Eisbach isn't for the faint-hearted. The current is strong, the water is icy (hence its name), and there are obstacles under the surface that can turn a fun dip into a dangerous ordeal. In fact, swimming here is officially prohibited due to past fatal accidents.
The entry point is near the Haus der Kunst, where you'll spot folks sliding into the stream. The exit point is crucial—miss it, and you could end up in serious trouble with a life-threatening dam waiting just 50 meters past the Tivoli Bridge.
If the Eisbach sounds a bit too extreme, we’ve got a safer alternative. Check out the Naturbad Maria Einsiedel, a beautiful outdoor pool in Thalkirchen where you can enjoy a refreshing swim without the chlorine.
The Isar Canal runs through this natural pool, offering a lake-like swimming experience with biologically purified water. Plus, there’s a kids’ paddling pool, a play area, and even a nudist section for those who want to sunbathe au naturel (known as FKK, or Freikörperkultur in Germany).

Did you know that the average German has 6 different types of insurance?
In a society that has a particular love for insurance, for expats it can be confusing to know which insurance products you really need versus which are simply nice to have.
Feather, the company dedicated to simplifying insurance for expats, has a nifty recommendation tool, which can give you a quick assessment of which insurances are a necessity, which are worth considering, and which are not relevant to you based on your lifestyle.
