3 bits of news
Germany’s future voters speak
Germany’s future voters have spoken and their choices don’t exactly match the polls for the official Bundestag election.
The U18 election, an initiative to engage young people in political education, saw almost 170,000 votes cast nationwide. The big winner? The Left Party came out on top with 20.8% of the vote, followed by the SPD 17.9%, CDU/CSU 15.7%, and AfD 15.5%.
Munich’s results were even more interesting. The Greens led in several voting districts, with the SPD and Left Party also making strong showings.
In Munich-North, for example, the Left and SPD together would have formed a government. In contrast, Bavaria as a whole leaned towards the CSU, mirroring traditional election trends.
Extended maternity protection in 2025
Starting June 2025, maternity protection in Germany will be expanded to cover miscarriages from the 13th week of pregnancy.
Until now, maternity benefits only applied from the 24th week, leaving many women without proper time to recover. This change ensures better support during a difficult time.
The length of leave depends on the stage of pregnancy:
• From the 13th week: Up to 2 weeks
• From the 17th week: Up to 6 weeks
• From the 20th week: Up to 8 weeks
During these periods, employers cannot require affected women to work unless they explicitly choose to return.
Women will also receive maternity benefits during this time, with employers reimbursed through the usual U2 insurance process.

Main line closures ahead
If you’re planning to take the S-Bahn in the next few weekends, you might need a backup plan. Due to testing for a new signal box at Ostbahnhof, the main line will be partially closed on February 22&23, March 1&2, and March 8&9. Expect disruptions between Pasing and Ostbahnhof, with only one line running through with others terminating early.
Several lines will be rerouted, canceled, or shortened:
• S1 will start/end at the main station.
• S2 West runs to Isartor but stops before Ostbahnhof.
• S3 & S5 won’t run between Pasing and Giesing.
• S6 & S8 will form a continuous line from Tutzing to the airport—the only one crossing the main line.
There will be replacement buses and U-Bahn alternatives (especially U5 and U2) to help passengers navigate the changes.
For more info, read here (in German).
Reminder: modernization of U3 & U6 that started on February 17, will take another 15 weeks to complete.
