3 bits of news

Munich eyes Olympic comeback

Mayor Dieter Reiter and Bavarian Premier Markus Söder are teaming up to pitch Munich as host city for the Summer Olympics in 2036, 2040 or 2044. And they’ve got a Paris-style game plan in mind: reuse what we’ve got, add a few bold touches and keep most venues within 50km.

Here’s the gist:

  • Main hub: Olympic Park, expanded to Leonrodplatz for skateboarding and BMX

  • Key venues: Olympic Stadium (track and field), Olympiahalle (gymnastics), SAP Garden (handball), Dantebad (water polo), English Garden (tennis + equestrian), and even the Starnberger See (open water swim)

  • Surprise highlight: beach volleyball on Theresienwiese

But wait, it’s not a done deal.

A citywide vote is scheduled for October 26 to let residents decide. Reiter’s banking on more than just sports appeal, he says the plan includes new housing, better transit, and long-term city upgrades.

If Munich wins the bid, we’ll be going up against cities like Madrid and Rome. Not a small challenge but neither is Munich.

New portal boosts accessibility

Getting around Munich just got a little easier, especially if you’re navigating the city with a wheelchair, stroller, or anything in between.

The Mobility Unit just launched a new online accessibility portal, and it’s packed with features that aim to make everyday movement more straightforward for everyone.

You can find over 900 disabled parking spots (with real-time updates on 550 of them), barrier-free public toilets, tire inflation stations, electric car rental points, and more.

It even shows active construction zones and temporary no-parking areas, so no more showing up to a blocked sidewalk or road without warning.

The portal was shaped by input from the city’s Advisory Councils for the Disabled and Senior Citizens and supports Munich’s “Mobility for All” 2035 strategy.

You can access it right from your phone or desktop and plan your route before stepping out the door. The city’s also working to add more features and make the map itself even easier to use.

Munich’s arena takes shape

A fresh face is coming to Munich’s live music and event scene in 2029.

The new Munich Arena, set near the airport, is designed to hold up to 20,000 people. From concerts to cultural festivals, this spot will be built for the big stuff.

Behind the project is SWMUNICH Real Estate, with support from the city and serious backing from global entertainment giant Live Nation.

Think: top-tier sound, high-end design, and a setup that attracts fans not just from Bavaria, but from Austria, Switzerland, and even northern Italy.

The plan includes high-level acoustics, great sightlines, and all the perks you’d expect from a major modern venue.

The Arena also brings big numbers. A Deloitte study projects over €390 million in added value during construction, and €354 million annually once it opens. And with Live Nation involved, the event lineup is expected to hit global levels.

It’s still under development, but keep an eye on this one.

We’d like to thank our second sponsor, Feather Insurance.

Let’s start with the bad news: Germany’s public health insurance barely covers dental care. Sure, it’ll help with emergency tooth extractions and those unmistakable silver amalgam fillings. But if you want professional cleanings, natural-looking fillings, or long-term dental care, be prepared to pay out of pocket.

Now, the good news: Feather’s dental insurance has your back.

For as little as €10.90 a month, you get coverage for:

🦷 Professional cleanings– Typically€85–€125per session. We’ll cover it.
🦷 High-quality fillings– Because your teeth shouldn’t look like a metal detector jackpot.
🦷 Preventative treatments– Fluoride for strong enamel, sensitivity treatments, and fissure sealing to keep cavities at bay.
🦷 Teeth whitening– Get€200 every two years with our advanced plan.

No paperwork. No awkward German phone calls. Just seamless, stress-free dental insurance - 100% digital, 100% in English.

1 new restaurant/café to try

Kulturdachgarten

Need an escape without leaving the city? We’ve got just the spot.

Kulturdachgarten sits high above Munich on top of a multi-story parking garage, and it’s quickly become the go-to for laid-back vibes, cold drinks, and great views.

This summer-only rooftop hangout serves up vegetarian and vegan-friendly dishes (think fresh Indian-style warm bowls) alongside craft beer and cocktails.

Prices lean high, but hey, you’re paying for the atmosphere too and it’s solid. You’ll find wooden decor, leafy greens, and a buzzing young crowd soaking up the sun.

Things to Know

  • Yes, there are stairs. Lots. No elevator, so accessibility is limited.

  • It gets busy. Like, line-around-the-bar busy.

  • The views? Totally worth it.

  • There’s music, but a little more wouldn’t hurt.

  • Best tip: Go early to grab a seat.

So if you’re cool with a little climb and a slightly posh crowd, Kulturdachgarten is a summer must.
