Good news for anyone flying out of Munich this week. From Thursday, September 18, the 100ml liquids rule is abolished at all security checkpoints at Munich Airport. Laptops stay in the bag too.
One catch: transfer airports may still apply the old rules, so check the full route before packing that giant conditioner.
Also useful if you fly from Memmingen: a new direct shuttle launched on September 7, running between Munich's central bus station (ZOB) and Memmingen Airport in 1 hour 25 minutes. Thirteen departures a day, tickets from €6.99 and if you miss your bus, you can use the same ticket on the next one. Book online here.

Munich just secured two of the world's biggest sporting events
On Tuesday, UEFA and World Athletics announced that Munich will host the Champions League Final in 2028 and the World Athletics Championships in 2031. The CL Final comes to the Allianz Arena in Fröttmaning on May 27, 2028 – Munich's fifth time hosting the biggest game in European club football.
The World Athletics Championships land at the Olympiastadion in Milbertshofen in 2031 – the first ever held in Bavaria. The 2031 championships will bring around 2,200 athletes from 195 nations across nine event days.
The last time Munich hosted such a major event was the European Championships in 2022, which packed the stadium night after night. Announcements came days before the German Olympic Committee decides which city – Munich, Berlin, or Rhein-Ruhr – will bid for the 2036, 2040, or 2044 Summer Games.
No German passport? You can still vote in Munich in November
On November 22, Munich holds its Migrationsbeiratswahl – the election for the Migration Advisory Council. If you're a Munich resident without a German passport, aged 18 or over, and have lived here for at least six months, you're eligible to vote. You should receive a polling card automatically in the mail.
The Migrationsbeirat is a 40-member council elected directly by Munich's international and migrant community. It advises the city council and administration on migration and integration policy, submits motions, asks questions, and pushes for community interests.
Want to run as a candidate? Submissions are open until September 25 at noon. German citizens with dual nationality or who received a German passport in the past 12 years can also vote and run – register by emailing the Wahlamt, here.
The Munich app keeping kids safe online
Helmit is a Munich-based AI app that protects children on social media. Founded by two friends; Leonardo Benini and Alexander Wolters, the app connects to platforms like WhatsApp, Instagram, and Discord and detects signs of cyberbullying, grooming, and inappropriate content in real time. When a risk is flagged, parents get an alert.
The key differentiator is privacy. Most existing tools either block apps or analyze chats by sending data to the cloud. Helmit runs entirely on the parent's device. It handles text, audio, images, and video, and takes two minutes to set up.
One in five children experience cyberbullying, one in four face grooming attempts. Helmit's argument is simple: a blanket social media ban shifts the problem rather than solving it.

The Bayerische Staatsoper opens its doors to everyone this Saturday
The UniCredit Eröffnungsfest at the Nationaltheater in Altstadt-Lehel on Saturday, September 19 is the annual day when the Bayerische Staatsoper opens up for FREE. It kicks off at 11am with a sing-along concert on the steps of the Nationaltheater. The public is invited to sing along.
Open House runs from 11:30am to 4pm. Backstage tours depart every ten minutes covering costumes, wigs, props, and the stage machinery. Dance workshops, children's activities, and live music across the building fill the rest of the afternoon. Most activities need no ticket – just show up.
The evening continues with a performance of Rossini's comic opera La Cenerentola at 6pm (separate ticket required), followed by a Jazz Night.

The Outdoor Sports festival turns 10 this month
The Outdoor Sports Festival celebrates its 10th anniversary on Sunday, September 27 at Olympiapark. Over 60 different outdoor sports are set up across the grounds, all FREE to try – from biathlon laser shooting and mountain biking to stand-up paddling on the Olympic Lake and more.
Elite athletes demonstrate their sports throughout the day, with tips available directly from the pros. Inclusive stations run alongside, letting people with and without disabilities participate together. Around 40,000 people turned up last year – so not exactly a hidden gem, but a great one.
Live music, food trucks, and the full iconic Olympiapark backdrop complete the picture. Show up whenever and try whatever – no registration needed.

Weihenstephaner am Platzl
The world's oldest brewery just opened its flagship restaurant in Munich. Weihenstephaner am Platzl opened this week at the Platzl in Altstadt-Lehel, taking over the former Alfons Schuhbeck space that sat empty after the star chef's fraud conviction and insolvency. The Hofbräuhaus is literally next door – also a state brewery.
The concept is a modern take on the traditional Bavarian Wirtshaus with Weihenstephan specialty beers on tap and seating for 180 “locals and tourists alike,” according to the Zinner family and new owners. Check it out now while you can still enjoy the outdoor terrace or wait until it gets colder for a fireside Stammtisch.
Reservations are probably a good idea while the novelty factor is still running hot.
