Here’s what we’ve got for you this week:
No matter where you are in Germany, don’t be alarmed next Thursday, September 11, when your phone suddenly sounds like it’s auditioning for a horror film – it’s just Warntag doing its thing. The national alert starts at 11am.
The goal is to see if the alarm actually reaches everyone, whether you’re in line for a warm Brezel or sandwiched between the commuting crowd on the U2.
And while you’re in the mood for preparedness… you can now stock up on official Wiesn gear at the Oktoberfest City Shop. Don’t slack off though, because this pop-up shop at the Tourist Information Center at Marienplatz is only open until September 12.

3 bits of news
The future of transport is here
From September 9–14, our Altstadt turns into a showroom where you can test-drive the future of transport. Expect EV test drives, e-bike circuits, and hands-on demos at Marienplatz, Odeonsplatz, Königsplatz, Max-Joseph-Platz, and beyond. Inside Messe München, car brands will do their big reveals.
The best part? The IAA Open Space and IAA Experience are totally FREE. You can hop on one of 200+ vehicles for a test spin, cycle a 4km track through the English Garden, or just wander around the festival zones. For kids, there’s the Family Trail with interactive stations, playful discovery zones, and even themed days at the Siegestor stage.
If you fancy yourself a city planner, the Citizens Lab at Marienplatz is your chance to pitch ideas about Munich’s future mobility straight to the experts. Meanwhile, traffic around Altstadt-Lehel and Maxvorstadt will be… let’s just say, creative.
Buses around Odeonsplatz are already rerouted and cyclists will notice detours too. You can read more about the detours here.
Get ready to be driven by a robot
Imagine calling a taxi and nobody’s driving. That’s the plan. Lyft’s Munich branch has bought the Freenow taxi app from BMW and Mercedes and plans to launch robotaxis by 2026. The federal government just cleared the way and the city’s on board so it’s official.
For locals, it could mean safer late-night rides and easier airport transfers. For expats and tourists, no more nervously rehearsing ‘zum Flughafen, bitte’ in the mirror.
It’s not here yet, but Munich is on track to become one of Germany’s first robotaxi hubs. Will you become one of its riders?
Bat parks are a thing now
Bats may not be Munich’s cutest residents, but they’re vital. With numbers dropping, the city and the Bavarian Association for Bird and Nature Conservation (LBV) are creating five bat parks – green zones with insect-friendly plants, fewer bright lights and cozy bat boxes.
The first area opened in Munich is in the spring gardens on the Isar, near Wittelsbacher Bridge (Munich-Au), with more to come by 2026. For locals, that means greener corners, more bees and birds – and way fewer mosquitoes crashing your beer garden nights.
You can now visit bat-friendly habitats with info signs and even a sound installation that lets you eavesdrop on their calls. After the launch, the park will be open 24/7, but the bonus treat is temporary: From now until November 2, you can check out the outdoor photo exhibition City Flutter - Bat Protection in the Big City.

Digital forests take over Kunsthalle
Forget paintings – this is art you step inside. Miguel Chevalier's digital exhibition at Kunsthalle München turns AI data into dreamlike visuals that cover entire walls. It’s immersive, trippy, and a solid rainy-day plan.
Why it’s a must-see:
120+ of Chevalier’s works span projections, sculptures and fractal-lit installations
Complex crystals and photographs of underwater creatures complement the show
In Vitro Pixel Flowers are the star feature: adults and kids can design virtual flowers online (from home or on-site) which then flourish in a digital greenhouse inside the exhibition

Turn trash into trophies
If you don’t have plans yet for the last weekend of summer vacay, you can take part in the Müllmeisterschaft (yes, the Garbage Championship). Back for its third round, teams from all over Munich will be racing to fill the most bags, collect the strangest finds (dog diapers anyone?), and claim a trophy.
Isarvorstadt vs. Schwabing, Moosach vs. Giesing – every district can join. Organizers hand out gloves, bags and grabbers, so all you need to bring is a crew and maybe some team spirit.
And it’s not just about who finds the weirdest shoe or rustiest bike part. Winners get a trophy, a surprise prize, bragging rights and the joy of living in a cleaner city, but most of all, a sense of community from working with your fellow residents.
The trophy will definitely be unique if the past years are any indication. Last year’s was a golden cylinder with Munich’s skyline, topped by a glittering rainbow see it here.
In the previous round, 15 districts and more than 470 Munich residents participated. This year, the organisation is challenging the city to see if this record can be broken. So rally your friends and… ready, set, clean!

1 new restaurant/café to try
Taqueria con Salsa
If you wish Taco Tuesday was everyday then this is the place for you. Taqueria con Salsa’s menu hits way beyond your average taco joint. Think lengua (beef tongue), carnitas bavaras (roast pork), and even Quesabirria so loaded with sautéed mushrooms and molten cheese it should come with a warning label. The sleeper hit? The verduras bravas salad – fresh, crunchy, and dressed with something so addictive we’d bottle it if we could. Pro tip: save room for the Pastel tres leches.
But what really makes it shine isn’t just the food – it’s the vibe. Smiles all around, joking with guests, singing, even dancing while they plate your food. It’s the kind of hospitality that feels less like a restaurant and more like being welcomed into someone’s family fiesta.
Prices are a bit on the expensive side but in return you’ll get the authentic flavors that you’ve been craving. Just don’t expect a quiet dinner; Taqueria con Salsa is loud, lively and unapologetically fun.
Fair warning: you might have to stand in queue since they don’t take reservations.
