Munich expands its outdoor spaces
Finding the perfect place to let loose, exercise, or just soak up some fresh air has never been easier. Munich has been hard at work upgrading and expanding its playgrounds and sports facilities, making sure there’s something for everyone from kids, teens and even adults who want to get active.
The city has revamped 13 playgrounds in the past year, making them more accessible, inclusive and packed with exciting features. Here are some standout additions:
Maßmannpark: A brand-new water playground is coming soon, along with swings, seesaws and a fitness area for all ages
Laimer Platz: This green space now boasts a massive climbing structure shaped like a centipede, plus workout stations for teens and adults
Langwieder See: Beach volleyball and football get a new companion—streetball
Feldmochinger See: A nature-inspired playground with wooden climbing structures and a towering slide
Siemens-Sportpark: New courts for beach volleyball, streetball and trendy sports like teqball and pickleball
Want to explore them all? The Munich Playground App can help you find the perfect spot near you.
The playground expansion isn’t stopping anytime soon.
Early summer will see the grand opening of Campus East, a massive new green area packed with climbing walls, football fields, streetball courts and more.

Would you pay for a package without knowing what’s inside?
Ever dreamed of a shopping spree where every purchase is a surprise?
That’s exactly what’s happening in Munich right now. The King Colis pop-up event at Forum Schwanthalerhöhe is turning everyday shoppers into treasure hunters.
This week (through Saturday, March 15) mystery packages are up for grabs—no peeking allowed. You pay by weight and take a chance on what’s inside.
The event kicked off with long lines forming within hours. Shoppers, like Sophia, have been waiting for over an hour to get their hands on these packages. Prices start at €1.99 per 100 grams for standard packages and €2.79 for premium ones.
With eight tons of lost packages to go through, there’s everything from tech gadgets to clothing and household items.
Some shoppers have hit the jackpot. Oliver H. found a brand-new pair of AirPods in his package, while others ended up with less exciting finds, like vacuum cleaner bags. Sophia walked away with a mini radio, a string of lights and a mystery package for her brother.
Even if the items aren’t useful, many say the fun of the experience is worth it.

New Ludwig II monument gets the green light
The long-awaited monument to King Ludwig II is finally happening, but on a smaller scale than originally planned.
After years of debate, Munich’s city council has approved a simplified version of the tribute, set to be built on the Cornelius Bridge in 2026. It’s been a long road for advocate Dietmar Holzapfel, who has spent years fundraising and pushing for the statue’s return.
The original statue of Ludwig II was melted down during World War II, leaving only the royal head behind.
Now, using elements from the 1910 original, the new design will feature a natural stone bust of the Bavarian king, surrounded by wild roses and seating areas.
While Holzapfel says the final version is “meager” compared to the grand vision, he remains determined to keep fighting for a larger tribute.
With €225,660 in donations already secured, the city will move forward with the current design, but Holzapfel isn’t stopping there. He’s launching a poster campaign in iconic Ludwig II locations, including Neuschwanstein and Linderhof, with a QR code for international visitors to donate.
His goal? To raise enough funds to make the statue even bigger.
