3 bits of news

Weekend transit changes

Starting this month, your late-night escapades just got easier. The Munich subway is adding night service on weekends as well as before holidays. Lines U2, U3 and U5 will run every 30 minutes, with easy transfers at Hauptbahnhof, Odeonsplatz and Sendlinger Tor.

Not riding those lines? U1, U4 and U6 will alternate 15 minutes later, giving you a city-center option every 15 minutes.

But please note that January weekends will see major disruptions to the S-Bahn main line due to signal box upgrades at Ostbahnhof. For subway riders, the southern U3/U6 section between Implerstraße and Klinikum Großhadern is undergoing modernization for the next few months.

Germany launches online visa portal

The Foreign Office has unveiled a new Consular Services Portal, where you can now upload your documents and track your visa progress online.

Here’s how it works: Upload your documents, fix any gaps flagged by officials, then attend an in-person interview to finalize things like biometrics and ID checks. With 167 embassies and consulates worldwide, the system is designed to make life easier for applicants.

The German government is hoping this new online portal will attract the skilled workers the economy desperately needs—40,000 annually, to be precise. Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock calls it a “real administrative revolution,” bringing Germany’s immigration process into the digital age.

Free Wi-Fi across Munich

Munich has made it easier to stay connected with its M-WLAN hotspots.

From tram stops to public buildings, the city is dotted with M-WLAN hotspots, offering two network options: M-WLAN Free Wi-Fi for quick connections and M-WLAN Secure Wi-Fi for more secure, regular use.

Here’s the deal: connect to M-WLAN Free Wi-Fi and accept the terms on the start page. After 120 minutes, you’ll need to reconnect. For frequent users, the encrypted M-WLAN Secure Wi-Fi provides a smoother experience after a one-time email registration.

Bonus: it supports up to three devices.

SingAlong event you can’t miss

Think of it as a party, concert and group therapy session rolled into one.

Happening on Thursday, January 23, at Isarpost, the night promises iconic tunes, lyrics displayed on a big screen for maximum participation, and some fun facts sprinkled in by your hosts.

St. Markus transformed by light

Starting next week on Thursday, January 16, St. Markus church in Maxvorstadt will host the mesmerizing Eonarium – Enlightenment, an immersive light and sound show by Zurich-based artist collective Projektil.

If you enjoyed their previous hits, Genesis I and II, get ready to be wowed again. This time, the spotlight (pun intended) is on Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, creatively reimagined and paired with stunning visuals.

But this isn’t your average light show. Using state-of-the-art 3D mapping technology, the Eonarium show will transform the architecture of St. Markus into a living canvas of light.

Imagine the seasons dancing across the walls, followed by an artistic dive into Eastern philosophies like Samsara and Nirvana. It’s a fusion of art, technology with a sprinkle of existential wonder.

Hai Seafood Izakaya

Munich’s seafood scene just got a glow-up with Hai Seafood Izakaya on Kellerstraße in Au-Haidhausen.

Think cozy vibes, friendly service, and dishes that will transport you straight to the shores (minus the sand). From their perfectly crispy Pan Fried Karaage to the seafood boil swimming in rich Tom Yum sauce, this spot promises fresh flavors and a touch of adventure for your taste buds.

And it’s not just about the food. The ambiance is perfect for shaking off work stress or catching up with friends over a plate of prime oysters or prawn-stuffed lotus flowers.

Bonus points for the nearby modern parking lots—because we all know downtown parking can feel like a treasure hunt.

The seafood boil is the crown jewel here, packed with squids, scallops, shrimp, crabs, and more. Pro tip: Add glass noodles. They soak up the broth like a dream. Fancy something sweet? Their Cheesecake Pistachio is a must-try with its unique flavor.
