Here’s our weekly roundup:

With the Olympiaturm closed for renovation, Munich’s skyline needed a stand-in – and it just got one. The brand-new SkyLIFT in Olympiapark takes you up 14 stories in a glass lift for wide-open views over the city and even the Alps on a clear day. It’s Munich’s coolest new photo op and a real insider tip for when out-of-town friends ask, Where’s the best view?

Starting the week of September 8, the SkyLIFT will relocate to Oktoberfest, giving you a sky-high view of the Wiesn before returning to Olympiapark on October 13.

3 bits of news

Munich’s simple trick to outsmart online scams

Online shopping scams are everywhere and not always easy to spot. That’s why the consumer advice office Verbraucherzentrale has launched a free Fakeshop Finder tool.

Type in any website and it instantly gives you a safety summary: red if it’s risky, green if it’s legit, orange if it’s unclear and you should double-check before buying. It’s simple, quick, and can save you from handing over money (and your data) to the wrong people.

Right now it’s especially relevant for Munich with Oktoberfest around the corner. So before you book a Wiesn table or click “buy” on that discounted Dirndl, run the site through the tool online and make sure it’s the real deal.

Cooking up community that build friendships

Munich can feel a little closed-off, especially if you’re new here – and that’s exactly what Über den Tellerrand wants to tackle. The nonprofit, also known as #maketheworldabetterplate, runs its Munich satellite out of Sendling.

The aim is to bring people with and without refugee or migration backgrounds together with locals through the one thing we all love; food. The multi-city organization creates spaces for locals and internationals to cook, meet and connect. The events are FREE but require registration through their website.

ÜdT focuses less on networking and more on building actual friendships. If you’re looking to find an inclusive and welcoming community in Munich then this is definitely the one for you. It's an easy way to meet people outside your usual bubble while shaping a more open, equal Munich.

Bonus: They also run a Tandem Team program for women, pairing those with and without refugee or migration experience to cook together, learn German and join workshops or excursions. If you’re a local wanting to help, you can become one of their volunteers here.

No more shortcuts through Rosenheim

If you’ve ever been tempted to dodge Autobahn traffic jams by slipping onto smaller country roads, heads up: that will not be possible from now on. New no-entry signs are being rolled out along the A8 and A93 near Rosenheim. They’re aimed at keeping through traffic off local streets when the Autobahn clogs up.

Here’s what's changing:

  • The bans apply from Friday through Sunday and on public holidays when traffic is at a standstill

  • They target popular exit spots like Bad Aibling, Rosenheim-West, Rohrdorf, Frasdorf, and Reischenhart (A93), among others

  • Affected roads will be permanently signposted with sign 250  –“Verbot für Fahrzeuge aller Art”

Residents and people heading to local destinations are exempt, but if you’re just passing through, stick to the Autobahn as violations will lead to fines.

Sport festival takes over Olympiapark

Save the date: On Sunday, September 28, Olympiapark will transform into one massive playground for the 8th annual Outdoorsportfestival. From biathlon and bouldering to breakdance workshops, as well as pump track riding, dragon-boat fun, crossminton, pickleball, even inclusive football and SUP yoga on the lake – this year's festival is expansive and inclusive.

Last year, the festival drew around 45,000 visitors, making it one of the biggest open-air sports events in Munich. It’s organized by München Sportamt in partnership with Olympiapark München and supported by the Bayerischer Landes-Sportverband and local clubs. The goal is simple: get more people moving and lower the barrier to try out new sports – no matter your age or fitness level.

The best part is that the event is FREE and open to all ages. Plus, after all that action, you can grab a bite to eat at the many food stalls scattered across the Park.

Munich’s open construction site

On Saturday, September 13, Munich Hauptbahnhof and Marienhof – are lowering the fences for the Tag der offenen Baustellen. It’s the latest open house for these construction sites where you can get an up-close look at the mega-project that’s building the city’s second mainline S-Bahn track.

At Hauptbahnhof, project experts will show how the new station is taking shape, with a chance to peek deep into the pit or even hop onto one of the excavators or loaders. For children, there will also be games and painting activities.

Over at Marienhof, you will get access to Germany’s deepest construction site. If you’re 120cm or taller, you can even descend 25m to Level -3 and see the freshly finished connecting tunnel to the subway. Marienhof will also offer special activities for children, including the opportunity to check out some more heavy machinery.

1 new restaurant/café to try

Lemar

Step off Leopoldstraße and straight into Kabul. That’s just how Lemar makes you feel with its hearty and flavorful Afghani cooking.

We tried the Murgh Curry and the Quabelli Palau ba Kebabe Morgh and both were the kind of dishes that warm you from the inside out. If you like heat, ask for the spicy chutney they serve with the Murgh Curry – it’s the perfect mix of fiery and fresh. Definitely kept thinking about that chutney for days.

Another thing we loved was that despite going there on a Friday, a reservation was not needed and we could still find a table easily. So in our experience you could also go here spontaneously. On top of that, the portions are generous, the prices are reasonable, and the service is friendly. One practical note: no cards here — cash only.
