Snap election for Germany: What’s next?

The postal election form for the german government elections in 2021

In a political twist, Germany’s coalition government has crumbled, setting the stage for a snap election on February 23, 2025. Chancellor Olaf Scholz and his center-left SPD hoped to push the election to March, citing the holidays and even a paper shortage, but opposition parties pushed for an earlier date. With the agreement finalized, German voters will head to the polls months sooner than planned.

Scholz’s coalition faced mounting disagreements, particularly over Germany’s economic model and the debt brake, a rule limiting government spending.

Scholz aimed to lift the brake temporarily to support job-saving measures, but this clashed with the fiscal priorities of the Free Democratic Party (FDP). Tensions escalated, leading to the FDP’s exit and the coalition’s collapse.

With the CDU/CSU alliance currently leading the polls, it looks likely they’ll head the next government, though coalition dynamics remain complex. Scholz’s SPD (which, by then, may have a new representative — possibly this guy), polling third, may need to partner with other parties to form a viable government, but reaching a stable agreement may be as tough as ever.

Munich police have made it a whole lot easier to find your lost or stolen bicycle.

Gone are the days of trudging to the police headquarters or scouring the lost property office. Instead, all you need is a screen, some Wi-Fi, and a little bit of hope.

Launched in August 2024, the new online platform already has over 150 bikes listed, just waiting to be claimed. If you recognize your beloved two-wheeler, the process is simple. Reach out to the Munich bicycle depot using their contact form or call directly at 089/74356142.

Did a shorter week boost productivity?

Photo by Minh Pham on Unsplash

Ever dream of a four-day workweek? Well, 45 companies in Germany decided to test that dream, allowing employees a shorter week with no pay cut. Monitored by Münster University researchers, this six-month experiment aimed to see if less could really mean more when it came to productivity.

Surprisingly, the results were promising! Employees reported feeling healthier and less stressed, and, for many, productivity stayed the same or even improved.

In fact, two-thirds of participants felt more focused thanks to streamlined meetings and optimized processes. But before we get too excited, let’s see if this can work for everyone.

The study did show some curveballs. Only about a third of the companies actually cut a full workday, while others reduced hours by just a few hours each week. And while most employees enjoyed a little extra physical activity and a few more Z’s, the number of sick days barely budged.

Ultimately, more than 70% of the companies want to stick with the shorter week—some even considering a permanent shift.
