3 bits of news

Munich district upgrades emergency alerts to WhatsApp

The Munich district just launched a WhatsApp channel called Sicher im Landkreis München. Until now, crisis warnings went out via press releases and apps like Nina or Katwarn – channels that often reach people too late. This one lands on your screen instantly, with maps, guidelines, and real-time updates.

It's not just for emergencies. Expect one to two tips a month – Isar safety, ice warnings, home first-aid checklists. It’s free, voluntary, and you stay anonymous. It won't replace existing warning systems, just make them better.

Oh, and today, Thursday, March 12 at 11am phones will sound alerts across Bavaria. It's a statewide warning day test. Just a heads up so you don't panic.

Get paid to make your building greener

The city of Munich is running its Mehr Grün für München competition – and if you've done something good for your courtyard, rooftop or front garden, you could win a cash prize for it. The competition has been running every two years since 1974, and submissions are open till June 30.

Homeowners, tenants, and business owners are all eligible. There are seven categories, from green roofs and biodiverse flower beds to child-friendly play areas and commercial spaces. Both professional projects and personal DIY efforts count.

Winners get certificates and cash prizes at a ceremony in the town hall. Apply by mail or email before June 30.

Find the application form and full details here and here (in German).

No winner yet – Munich's mayoral race goes to a runoff

Sunday's election had no outright winner. Dieter Reiter (SPD) led with 35.6%, a sharp drop from his 47.9% in the first round six years ago. Dominik Krause (Greens) came in second at 29.5%, and CSU's Clemens Baumgärtner trailed at 21.3%.

The two frontrunners now face each other in a runoff on Sunday, March 22.

Reiter came into the election under heavy criticism following recent scandals and the numbers show it. A 12-point drop from his last first-round result is not a small thing. Whether that changes on March 22 is the real question.

If you want to vote in the runoff, mark your calendar for March 22, 8am to 6pm. Mail-in voting is open until Tuesday, March 17 at 11am here. Your voter notification from March 8 is still valid so no new one will be sent.

A theater festival for families

Kuckuck is a theater festival built entirely for the youngest audience; babies, toddlers, and their grown-ups. From March 14 to 22, international theater groups from France, Belgium, and the Netherlands take over Munich with circus, dance, puppet shows, shadow theater, and live music.

It's worth noting the bigger picture: children's culture is losing funding across the board right now. Kuckuck is a direct response to that – an investment in creativity and participation for the next generation.

Finally – a proper English comedy club in town

The Jungle Comedy Club is Munich's first dedicated English stand-up comedy club, running weekly shows at Pineapple Park. With over 400,000 foreign residents in the city, it's taken long enough.

Here’s what’s in store: European headliners, strong local talent, and a crowd that's refreshingly international.

The lineup this month is varied: themed nights, roast battles, a bilingual open mic, and even a live comedy dating event. Something for every mood – whether you want to watch strangers get roasted or comedians solve your anonymous life problems on stage.

Honghong Noodles

Honghong Noodles

Honghong Noodles on Leopoldstraße in Schwabing is the kind of place that earns regulars fast. The food is fresh, well-seasoned, and you can taste the wok in every dish. The menu is big: Chinese and Thai, noodles, soups and wok dishes.

Portions are large and filling with prices mostly staying under €20, and the spice level is just right. If you’re vegetarian, please note that they unfortunately do not have a lot of options.

It's a two-story venue, so no complaints about space. Since it’s in a busy area, make sure to book a reservation for the weekends.
