Were you stuck waiting in those long lines this weekend? Did you know that Munich has rolled out new interactive maps that help you find the coolest spots in the city? We're talking about those hidden gems and shaded areas that offer relief from both crowds and heat. These digital guides point you toward parks, quiet squares and riverside spots where you can cool down and actually breathe.

3 bits of news
City backs solar power for balconies
Munich is literally paying residents to go solar. The city launched a funding program that covers up to 40 cents per watt for balcony solar panels, with a maximum of 50% of your total costs covered.
Here’s how it works: Apply online through Munich's funding portal, get approval, then buy your system. The city processes applications within a month and you'll see the money in your account eight to ten weeks after approval. One catch, though: you must apply before you buy anything. No exceptions.
IKEA jumped in with perfect timing. The furniture giant now sells complete balcony solar kits at all 54 German stores, starting at €449. And remember: IKEA Family members get an additional 15% discount on top of the city funding.
These aren't just panels either–we're talking expandable systems with battery storage that you can install yourself.
Eisbach reopens after investigation
After a tragic surfing accident earlier this year, the city shut down the Eisbach wave while prosecutors investigated.
For months, surfers could only watch the empty water flow by, wondering if their beloved spot would ever reopen.
Mayor Dominik Krause just announced the good news: prosecutors closed their investigation with no charges. The city is now working to reopen the wave as quickly as possible.
They're just waiting for access to the investigation files to make sure there are no hidden safety concerns that need addressing first.
The city worked with the Surfing in Munich interest group to create a comprehensive safety plan. The biggest change? All surfers must now use self-releasing leashes to prevent getting trapped underwater.
The city also updated regulations to reduce accident risks without turning the Eisbach into a bureaucratic nightmare.

Munich's colorful culture hub
You know that feeling when you walk past the same boring construction sites every day?
Well, Munich just flipped the script.
FLUX, the city's most colorful “construction site,” opens this Thursday right in front of the Pinakothek der Moderne. This isn't your typical building project, it's a vibrant wooden wonderland designed by London artist Morag Myerscough.
Picture geometric patterns in every color imaginable, urban gardens where you can get your hands dirty, and an open stage where anyone can perform.
FLUX runs for five years and offers something Munich desperately needed: a free public space where you can hang out without buying anything. Bring your own food and drinks or grab something from the Paloma Bar café inside.
FLUX is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10am to 10pm, giving you the perfect excuse to skip the crowded weekend spots.
The space launches during this weekend's Kunstareal Fest, so you can experience the full energy right from day one. They're planning workshops, creative cooking sessions, and performances on that open stage.

Seven different acts take to the stage throughout the day, starting with an open jam session at 2pm and ending with M6 at 11pm. Between sets, you can feast on specialties from La Bohème, Bicicletta, and Café Lisa, plus whatever's sizzling on the big grill.

1 new restaurant/café to try
Mian & Co
Mian & Co just opened on Augustenstraße, bringing the ancient art of Chinese lamian right to Maxvorstadt.
This isn't just another noodle shop, it's the sister restaurant to next-door Fan, specializing exclusively in those mesmerizing hand-stretched noodles.
Watch the magic happen through their open kitchen as skilled noodle masters transform simple dough into long, elastic strands right before your eyes.
You can even choose how thick or thin you want your noodles, something common in China but rare here in Germany. The portions are massive, the flavors are authentic, and the prices won't break your budget.
This cozy spot fills up fast, especially with groups. Smart diners make reservations or arrive early to snag a table. The menu focuses on a few iconic flavors done perfectly: traditional beef broth, spicy Sichuan-style, and surprisingly good vegetarian options with peanut-sesame sauce.
General information:
📍 Augustenstraße 58, 80333 München
🥘 Chinese
⏰ Tuesday–Thursday 11am–3pm, 5–10pm |
