3 bits of news

Surf accident halts Eisbach access

If you’ve walked by the Eisbach lately and noticed it strangely quiet, here’s why: the famous wave in the English Garden is closed.

Last week, a 33-year-old surfer got seriously injured after her leash got caught underwater. She had to be pulled out by firefighters. Since then, authorities have shut down the area while they investigate what went wrong.

They’re now looking into whether the flow of the water can be slowed down to safely examine the accident site. But that’s not simple. It’s a delicate system of streams with its own ecosystem and draining or throttling it could affect fish and other wildlife.

Police are considering diving operations and lowering the water level to search for what snagged the surfer’s leash.

In the meantime, the city and the surf community are thinking ahead, like adding rescue gear and possibly even warning signs near the wave.

Surfing the Eisbach is more than just a sport for many in Munich. It’s a tradition. But this moment is also a reminder that safety has to be part of that tradition.
Until further notice, no one is allowed to surf the wave. And yes, that includes sneaking in after hours.

Free fitness returns to parks

Time to dust off those sneakers. Starting May 1, Munich’s parks are turning into open-air gyms with the city’s popular Fit-im-Park program.

It’s totally free, super casual, and runs daily across 14 different parks through September 30.

From yoga to Zumba to a surprisingly popular Lederhosen workout, the program offers something for everyone. Classes are led by pro instructors, no sign-up needed. Just show up, move your body, and enjoy being outdoors.

What’s New and What’s Back?

  • New this year? Pickleball and Tao Yin at the newly revamped Hermann von Siemens Sportpark.

  • Fan favorites? Dancing in the Westpark, back training by the Lerchenauer See, and mini discos for kids.

  • Want something gentler? Try Sitz-Qigong, designed especially for people with limited mobility.

Most sessions start around 6pm, but a few early birds meet up in the mornings.

Rainy day? Check online before heading out.

Check sport-muenchen.de or this flyer for full class times, park locations and updates.

Fiktionsbescheinigung explained

If you’re in the middle of renewing your residence permit and wondering whether you can still work or travel, there’s good news: the “fictitious certificate” or Fiktionsbescheinigung, has your back.

It acts like a temporary extension, giving you permission to keep living your life while the district office processes your application.

But here’s the deal: this only works smoothly if you hand in all your documents upfront. Missing paperwork can stall the process big time.

Thinking long-term? If you’re applying for permanent residency or citizenship, there’s more paperwork involved. To even start the process, you’ll need to prove you’ve lived in Germany long enough.

And those trips abroad? Only six months max count toward your time here.

Expect delays, especially while the immigration office waits on other agencies for background checks and language certificate verifications, even if you already had your appointment.

You can save yourself time and confusion by checking the most common questions right 👉 here.
