Here’s what we’ve got for you this week:

Back-to-school season is here. From Tuesday September 16, Bavarian schools reopen and traffic will feel like the whole city forgot how to drive. We’re talking longer commutes, more bikes, and those adorable first graders with giant Schultüten

If you’ve got kids starting school, Munich is rolling out plenty of sweet promotions: free school enrollment gifts, goodies for the school cones, and even a free meal for first graders. You can check out the full list here

And while we’re talking dates to circle on your calendar: Ed Sheeran is coming to Munich this December, and presale tickets dropped today (September 11). If you want in, act fast and get tickets here.

3 bits of news

Meet your Oktoberfest wingman

First time at the Wiesn and feeling overwhelmed? Meet the bot that speaks Wiesn fluently. BreznBot is a new digital Oktoberfest assistant launched by tz.de. Whether you’re wondering which tent is kid-friendly, where the parades start, or how to get home after too many Märzen, BreznBot has you covered.

The bot answers questions in multiple languages (yes, English too), so expats and visitors don’t have to panic-google “How to order beer in Bavarian.”

This year’s Oktoberfest runs from September 20 to October 5, with many highlights like the Trachten- und Schützenzug (traditional costume parade) on opening weekend.

New EU Entry/Exit System starts in Munich

Starting October 12, Düsseldorf Airport will be the first in Germany to roll out the EU’s new Entry/Exit System (EES). Frankfurt and Munich will follow soon after, making them some of the first major hubs to swap passport stamps for biometrics.

So rather than the old-school passport stamp routine, travelers from outside the EU (UK, USA, Canada etc.) will scan their face or fingerprints. Details will then get logged digitally and stored for up to three years.

In theory, it should make border checks faster. In practice, airports are warning of longer lines at first as staff and travelers get used to it. Benefits of this new setup will include fewer overstayed visas, smoother re-entry for frequent travelers, and eventually faster border checks.

If you’re traveling in from outside the EU, double-check your passport. Many destinations require it to be valid for at least three to six months beyond your return date. For citizens of the European Union, nothing will change with the introduction of the EES.

Banking just got safer

EU banks have got your back. And starting this fall, they're adding an extra layer of security to transfers. This check will make sure that the name and IBAN you enter actually match the account details.

No more relying on whatever shows up in an invoice or email – this way you’ll get a quick green light before your money moves. Think of it as a built-in safety net for your payments.

It’s rolling out gradually, but once live, you’ll get a warning if the name and number don’t match. It kicks in on October 9, for all transfers across the eurozone. By July 2027, the rule will stretch EU-wide – so no matter where you bank in Europe, the details have to match.

The new checks apply to all transfers – online and over the counter. Cheers to fewer frauds, fewer headaches.

Cinema lovers, rejoice – Das Kinofest is back

Lights, camera, popcorn – treat yourself to two full days of big-screen bliss without breaking the bank. This weekend, Munich cinemas are joining Germany’s biggest movie party: Das Kinofest 2025.

Here’s the best bit: every film is only €5. So whether you missed catching Superman on the big screen or feel like scaring yourself with The Conjuring, this weekend’s your chance.

And don’t worry, the little ones aren’t left out. The Disney Channel Participation Cinema flips the usual “shh, no talking” rule on its head. Kids are encouraged to sing, dance, clap, and even interact with animated hosts at select cinemas.

Use this link to find participating cinemas near you and map out your movie marathon.

Munich just scored a brand-new art hotspot: the Bergson Gallery, part of the Bergson Kunstkraftwerk in Aubing. The space is designed for contemporary art and big-name exhibitions, and it officially opened this month with a showcase of international artists.

The gallery kicked things off with an exhibition that redefines what we think of as a portrait. The Beyond Surface show blends paintings, photography, and objects that don’t just capture faces, but their personalities as well. It’s unique, bold, and on view until November 16.

If you’ve been looking for a new weekend adventure, this is it.

Mr. Gogi Korean BBQ

Source: Our editor Sana Ahmed

If you’ve ever wanted to play chef with unlimited appetisers (yes, appetisers come with free refills), welcome to Maxvorstadt’s Mr. Gogi. It's a DIY Korean BBQ, so the grill is right at your table – meaning you’ll either nail the perfect sear or (like us) nearly burn your beef until the staff swoops in with rescue tips.

We went big with the mixed meat platter and the meat + fish combo. We definitely didn’t leave hungry – the platters were more than enough, and honestly, the sides stole the show. The gyozas and soup? Absolute standouts.

As for the environment, it’s lively, group-friendly, and a fun experience. Just remember: take staff tips, keep tissues on hand as it can get quite smokey sometimes and enjoy.
