Here’s what we’ve got for you this week:

This Sunday, November 1, is All Saints’ Day – a public holiday in Bavaria. So in addition to shops and stores, most museums, swimming pools and other leisure spots are closed. It’s worth checking opening hours before you plan any outings.

Herbstferien also starts next week in Bayern and other Bundesländer. If you fancy a special café experience, the European Coffee Trip just dropped its 2026 awards. You can see the winners here.

Lastly, if you haven’t activated your eID yet, there’s a step by step guide to help you. Your German ID card has a digital function that lets you verify yourself online, no office visit needed. Here’s how to switch it on (in English).

3 bits of news

Munich wants you to walk more this November

Stadt Land zu Fuß is a nationwide walking challenge held every November where German cities compete to log the most kilometers. Commutes, school runs, grocery trips, weekend hikes, all of it counts. Munich is in, and this year the campaign runs from November 1 to 21.

About a third of all trips in Munich are already made on foot – one of the higher rates in Germany. The campaign wants to push that further, especially as the weather turns and people default to public transportation.

Joining in is FREE. Register on the app, select München, and start logging your steps. You can go solo or as a team.

No more dragging your recycling to the corner

Right now, recycling in Munich means a walk to the Wertstoffinsel – the shared collection points dotted around your neighborhood where you drop off plastic, cans, and packaging. The city approved a fix: a Gelbe Tonne placed outside your building, collected every two weeks, starting in 2027.

Bins come in four sizes: 120, 240, 770, and 1,100 liters – one for every building type. Collection fees stay the same.

What goes in it: plastic bottles, yogurt containers, Tetra Pak cartons, tin cans, aluminum foil. For more examples click here (in English). Everything you’ve been hauling to the corner island.

Your local library has a full month of free events

Each November is Aktions-Monat Bibliotheken; an initiative for libraries across Germany. Munich’s Stadtbibliothek is taking part with a calendar packed with readings, community workshops, and family activities at all 23 branches. Maxvorstadt, Schwabing, Giesing, Neuhausen – there’s likely something in your neighborhood.

Most events are open to walk-ins and it’s FREE for Munich residents. You don’t even need a library card to attend but it’s a good time to get one either way.

The Munich Book Fair is back

The Münchner Bücherschau turns 67 this year and it’s still one of the best FREE things to do in November. Publishers fill the west wing of Haus der Kunst in Lehel with over 10,000 titles including fiction, children’s books, cookbooks, and audiobooks.

You can browse everything but you can’t buy on the spot. The fair points you to local bookshops instead.

Author readings and panel talks run throughout the three weeks in the Forum inside the venue. The opening hours are long so you can walk in on a weekday evening after work and still have two hours to browse.

Check out dragon boat racing, mermaid swimming, diving, aqua gym, waterlining, and so many more. Built for all ages, from babies at the shallow end to adults trying the high board.

The DLRG runs official swimming badge sessions too – Seepferdchen and Bronze for kids, plus a new inclusive Seesternchen badge this year. Bring swimwear and towels; all other equipment is provided. Note: Some activities require online registration, so check the website before you go.

Pizza Pilgrims

Pizza Pilgrims started in 2012 in London with two brothers, Thom and James Elliot, who took their Piaggio van on a road trip through Italy to learn the art of Neapolitan pizza–from scratch. They now run 30+ restaurants across the UK and their first outside Britain opens this Friday, October 31, in Munich, in the old Pide Go Minga space on Leopoldstraße in Schwabing.

The menu centers on Neapolitan-style pizza. The room runs to about 255m², big enough for a group, relaxed enough to not feel like a canteen.
