A library card in Munich gets you so much more than books. The Music Lab at Gasteig HP8 in Sendling has a fully soundproofed room with recording equipment, microphones, instruments, and an ePiano – all FREE to use. 

Book up to two hours a day with your card, Monday to Friday from 10am to 11pm, and Saturdays until 3pm.

If you want to go further, Track 'n' Field lets Munich-based musicians record a live session with a 360° camera at no cost.

Germany is digitising unemployment benefits

Germany has passed a draft law to digitise the ALGI unemployment benefit process. Currently, claimants have to monitor their actual mail box for letters from the Jobcenter and respond promptly. Under the new system, everything moves online. Registration, applications, correspondence, and even counselling sessions will be via video call.

The change that matters most for expats: claimants will no longer need to be tied to their registered address. That means it becomes possible to job hunt from abroad while still claiming benefits, provided you inform the Jobcenter about any prolonged stays.

The law still needs to pass a parliamentary vote. If it does, the digital system is expected to be in place by the end of November. Note: this applies only to ALGI (short-term unemployment benefit), not Grundsicherung (formerly known as Bürgergeld).

The MVHS summer program is bigger than you think

The Munich Volkshochschule (adult education center) runs a summer program from mid-July to late September with dozens of compact courses. Bird walks in the East Cemetery, 90-minute lectures on Buddhism, a culinary week with an optional diploma, bike tours around the city, and many more unique offerings.

The four-day workshop format lets you go deep on one discipline – welding, pottery, video editing, harmonica, or frame drums. Language options go from English all the way to Georgian. Seniors, students prepping for exams, and professionals brushing up on rhetoric or project management all have their own tracks too.

Get lost in a sunflower field this weekend

Farmers Veronika and Martin Strobl have opened a two-hectare sunflower maze near Obermoosweg in Germering. It’s a first for the entire region. Wind through thousands of square meters of sunflowers, solve riddles at five interactive stations, and collect stamps along the way. Kids get a punched card to take home at the end.

The small entrance fee for adults and children over 6 helps cover the cost of maintaining the maze and local ecology program. Early visitors say the kids didn't want to leave! You can park at Germeringer See and walk over. Open daily until dusk, plan at least an hour to see everything.

Gasteig HP8 turns into a free dance festival this Saturday

Dance the Gasteig takes over the entire Gasteig HP8 in Sendling on Saturday, July 25, from 2pm until after midnight. The whole building becomes a dance floor with capoeira, salsa, K-pop, breaking, Modern Jive, and a silent disco under the open sky. Open to all.

Workshops run from the afternoon, with a kids' disco at 3pm and FREE festival styling sessions running alongside. The Planet Move disco in Hall E closes out the night.

Everything is FREE. Food trucks are on site and the parking garage at the wholesale flower market opens from 2:30pm.

Slide down a mountain near Munich this weekend

The Blomberg summer toboggan run in Bad Tölz is one of the longest in Europe. Start at 1,300m and traverse 17 steep curves, and 41 sharp bends down the mountain on a sled with a brake lever in the middle. You can ride up to the mid-station and slide down without doing the full ascent on foot.

If you do want to walk up, the path to the summit takes about an hour on well-maintained trails. The Blomberghaus at the top has food, drinks, and a panoramic view over the northern limestone Alps. Definitely worth a stop before descending.

If you want more speed, the Blomberg-Blitz can hit 40km/h on a rail track – and runs rain or shine. Both are reachable by car or bus from Bad Tölz.

Amigos Restaurante Mexicano 

Amigos is a small, family-run Mexican restaurant on Dachauer Straße in Maxvorstadt. The owner has been cooking Mexican food for 25 years and the menu stays focused: fajitas, burritos, enchiladas, quesadillas, and guacamole made with fresh ingredients. 

The fajitas are the thing people keep coming back for – the chicken and prawn versions standing out the most.
