Here’s our weekly roundup:

It’s official: “Biodeutsch” takes an unwelcome spotlight as Germany’s “Bad word of the Year” for 2024. Once intended as a satirical jab, it’s now a troubling term used to enforce divisions between “real” and “second-class” Germans.

On a lighter note (or colder, depending on your thermostat), here is where you can find when schools are canceled due to bad weather.

3 bits of news

Decathlon at Stachus: Smaller, Smarter, Better

It’s back! Decathlon has reopened at Stachus, but this time it’s a little more compact. With a snug 320-square-meter store, the French sporting goods giant is switching gears, focusing on the everyday needs of Munich’s busy commuters and pedestrian zone visitors.

The shop in the Stachus Passages is all about efficiency, offering Click & Collect services for online orders. Need to try on those new running shoes or yoga pants?

Germany’s passport ranks 3rd

According to the latest Henley Passport Index, Singapore once again takes the crown for the world’s most powerful passport.

For those with a German passport, though, it’s still a sweet deal. You can jet off to most parts of the world without worrying about a visa application.

But if you’re holding an Afghan passport, travel options narrow to just 26 destinations. It’s a stark reminder of how much freedom is tied to a small booklet.

The Henley Passport Index relies on data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) to crunch the numbers. It looks at how many countries you can visit without the hassle of a pre-approved visa.

European passports continue to dominate the top spots, with Japan claiming second place this year, nudging a few countries down the ladder.

Let’s be real, nothing beats a night at the movies—except when the ticket is free, the films are European gems, and there’s a post-movie chat to flex your film-nerd muscles.

Mark your calendars for Monday, February 3, because Kino Europa is back at Projector | Gasteig HP8, and they’re bringing a slice of Europe to Munich.

This quarter’s film is not just entertainment—it’s a cultural adventure. The movie will screen in its original language with subtitles (so no excuses if your French or Spanish is rusty).

Thanks to the collaboration between Munich City Library and other cultural partners, you’ll leave feeling a bit more worldly.

After the screening, stick around for a film talk. It’s your chance to hear expert insights, share your own take, or just nod thoughtfully while others do the talking. And since entry is free, all you need to bring is an open mind and maybe some popcorn for sharing.

Book your ticket here (in German).

Indoor stair run

Forget your regular jog around the park; this February, it’s all about climbing to the top—repeatedly.

The first-ever BFW Indoor Stair Run is happening on Sunday, February 16, and it’s your chance to conquer 140 steps across two towers.

The route starts at the foyer of the main building, climbs up seven floors in the south tower, crosses over to the north tower, and winds back down.

Feeling ambitious? Go for the Main Run and see how many laps you can smash out in two hours.

Prefer something a bit more chill? The Hobby Run lets you test your mettle in just 30 minutes.

Registration is open now. Email [email protected] or register here to secure your spot. And don’t forget to sign the participation waiver when you pick up your race packet.
