Here’s what we’ve got for you this week:

Dantebad in Neuhausen just added a 7m x 14m synthetic ice rink. It runs until Sunday, November 1, and is included in the regular pool or sauna entry. There's no skate rental so bring your own.

Speaking of pools, Westbad in Pasing-Obermenzing reopens next Wednesday, October 14, after being closed since April 27. The indoor pool and sauna are back daily from 7:30am. The outdoor salt pool is still being worked on, so there's a 20% discount on the entry price for swimming.

Also worth knowing: seven artist-designed pianos are now placed across Munich's neighborhoods as part of the Spiel mich! project. Anyone can sit down and play for FREE.

The Munich Ferienpass just went fully digital

Munich's Ferienpass – the city's holiday pass for kids went digital this week. Parents can now buy it through the new booking portal here and load it straight into their phone wallet. Finally no more hunting for the paper version before every school holiday activity.

The pass covers the autumn school holidays starting next month and runs through 2027. Everything is in one place: buying, browsing activities, signing up.

For kids without smartphones, a paper printout still works. Families on low incomes still get FREE passes at the usual distribution points, with a voucher code for the digital version.

Deutsche Bahn's €99.99 family ticket is becoming permanent

In June, Deutsche Bahn introduced its family ticket as a limited summer promotion. Over 800,000 people used it, so they're keeping it. From November 1, up to 2 adults and up to 4 children aged 6–14 can travel anywhere in Germany on long-distance trains return for €99.99 in second class, maximum 5 people total. Seat reservations included.

At least one child must be in the group but no proof of family relationship is required. Grandparents, patchwork families, and non-related groups all qualify. Children under 6 travel FREE as always and don't count toward the limit.

40+ Munich city departments come to Marienplatz this Saturday

Once a year, Munich's city departments and municipal companies set up on Marienplatz and the surrounding streets to show residents what they actually do. This year's Aktionstag: Da sein für München is this Saturday, October 10, from 10am to 5pm.

Over 40 pavilions will be spread across Marienplatz, Kaufingerstraße, Neuhauser Straße, and Rindermarkt. Departments cover everything from waste management and the 115 hotline to IT services and construction projects. Staff are there in person to explain, answer questions, and show new technologies.

FREE to attend with live music running throughout the day.

Higher rates have put a lot of people off buying in Munich, but the advertised rate is rarely what makes or breaks a purchase. For years money was almost free and nearly any financing looked fine. Borrowing costs have since roughly quadrupled, while prices have been slower to adjust. The market did not hand buyers a cheaper entry, so the question is how the financing is built to fit today's market. That part you control.

Take a 600,000 euro loan. At a 2% repayment rate it ran about 1,500 euros a month near 1%, and about 3,000 near 4%. The higher monthly is real. But the loan now clears years sooner. A 2% repayment that dragged past 40 years when money was cheap clears in under 30 today. Even easing to 1% repayment comes in around 40 years now, not the 60-plus it once meant. Most loans also let you make extra repayments during the fixed term, so you can bring the balance down faster when you have the cash. A lower repayment can keep the monthly in check without committing you to a mortgage that never ends.

How long you fix, how fast you repay, how you place your equity, and which KfW program you use can separate two buyers of the same Munich flat at the same bank. That spread is what the webinar is about.

finbird's free webinar: 45 minutes, plain English. Founder Daniela Kögel walks through the buying process, how German mortgages work in a higher-rate market, and real case studies so you see the numbers, not the theory. Live Q&A at the end. Cannot make it live? Register and we will send you the recording.

Next session: 20 October. Online, free, no obligation.

Check out our partner MITA podcast for Expats.

Ever wondered how much of our path is written and how much is ours to choose? In this episode of The MITA Podcast, host Tatjana Krajsic speaks with Daria Eichinger about Jyotish, an ancient Indian tradition passed down through generations and why it's about far more than predicting the future.

They get into what a birth chart can actually tell you about your strengths, challenges, and natural tendencies, why this tradition has long been used privately by people in positions of power, and why free will stays at the centre of it all.

The conversation also opens up into cultural heritage, purpose, and what ancient wisdom still has to teach us about how we navigate our lives today.
