Here’s what we’ve got for you this week:

IKEA just made a big change in all its German stores, including the ones in Brunnthal and Eching: dogs are now allowed inside. Finally, no more debating the Billy shelf solo. They need to be on a short leash or in a carrier, and a few areas are off-limits, like the Bistro and the Småland kids' zone.

Water bowls and leashes are available at the entrance. Happy shopping!

3 bits of news

The city’s biggest bike competition is underway

Stadtradeln is a nationwide cycling campaign and Munich is taking part for the 19th time. From June 15 to July 5, anyone who lives, works, studies, or belongs to a club in Munich can join a team and log every bike trip they take. Everything from commutes, school runs, grocery trips, etc., counts toward Munich's total.

This week, the city has already logged over 395,000 kilometers across nearly 1,200 teams. SWM Stadtwerke München currently leads the company rankings, ahead of LMU University Hospital and Munich Police Headquarters.

Apart from getting fit, there are other incentives to join. Top teams win prizes across different categories like families, schools, and clubs, and this year a new prize goes to Munich's most active district committee. Sign up here and start logging your rides.

Munich is giving away free beer at Marienplatz this Saturday

Brewers' Day returns to Marienplatz on Saturday, June 20, and yes, there is FREE beer. The day marks 32 young brewers completing their apprenticeship, who get ceremonially “knighted” by Mayor Dominik Krause and swear an oath to Munich's 1487 Purity Law: barley, hops and water, nothing else.

The day starts at 8:30am with a church service at St. Peter's, followed by a parade of brewery horse-drawn carriages winding through Viktualienmarkt, Rosental, Rindermarkt and then to Marienplatz around 10:30am.

The ceremony follows at 11:15am and the first keg of beer gets tapped at around 12:30pm. So you know exactly when the party starts. This year there will also be a special appearance of the Schäffler dancers.

Munich has 11 free public pianos right now – go play one

Eleven artistically designed pianos are sitting in public spaces across Munich right now, FREE for anyone to sit down and play. The project is called Play Me!, inspired by British artist Luke Jerram's decades-long global piano project.

Munich's version has been running since 2014, organized by the Isarlust club and die urbanauten. Each piano is individually decorated, and most are tucked into spots where people naturally hang out like parks, squares, and public corners around the city.

If you want to help look after a piano during the project, or if your group wants to decorate one for the second round happening this fall (from October 8 to 29, in eight more districts), the organizers are looking for volunteers. You can contact them here.

Find more information and a map of the pianos here (in German).

A future-tech festival takes over Museum Island next month

The Festival of the Future returns to Museum Island in Isarvorstadt from July 2 to 5, run by the Deutsches Museum and 1E9. The first two days are a professional conference covering AI, robotics, mobility, and the future of music and film with tickets being required.

On the weekend, July 4 and 5, the whole thing opens up to families with FREE admission. These family days bring hands-on activities, a street festival, a scavenger hunt and an interactive exhibition covering virtual reality and future technologies.

This is the fifth edition of the festival, and it has grown into one of Munich's bigger gatherings for tech and science enthusiasts.

A whole street goes car-free this weekend

The Zamanand Festival takes over Leopoldstraße in Schwabing and Maxvorstadt this Saturday and Sunday, June 20 and 21. This year marks 25 years of Car-Free Day, and the festival leans into that with a look back at the original vision and what comes next for car-free streets in Munich.

There will be a mix of science, sports, and art all along the street. There's a giant skate and BMX ramp with free workshops, science exhibits from Munich's top research institutions, and a city-run space focused on climate and sustainable living.

For art lovers, there will be light projections, digital installations, and a stage dedicated to European culture and diversity. And just down the road, the Kulturstrand at Professor-Huber-Platz stays open all weekend, so the celebration doesn't have to end when the festival does.

Panic is a financial news strategy. Clarity is ours.

Markets move. Headlines catastrophise. But somewhere inside the noise is the story that matters — the opportunity, not the fear.

The Daily Upside was built by Wall Street insiders to find it — global business and finance, reported without the alarm.
