Here’s our weekly roundup:

Oktoberfest isn’t just for the locals—over the years, it’s become a hotspot for celebrities too. This year, stars like Ed Westwick, Johnny Depp, Lucien Laviscount, and football star Harry Kane have all been spotted enjoying the festivities, proving that even the rich and famous can’t resist a good beer and bratwurst while singing Ein Prosit.

If you’re heading to the Wiesn and want to blend in with the Bavarians, here are a few key phrases to try out.

Reminder: Next Thursday, October 3 is Reunification day, a public holiday—shops will be closed so be sure to do your shopping beforehand (also plan your holidays according with the bridge holiday — Brückentag).

3 bits of news

Google’s all-inclusive tech hub

Google has officially opened its first Accessibility Discovery Center in Germany, right here in Arnulfpark.

It’s a place where people with and without disabilities can explore innovative technologies that make everyday life a little bit easier for everyone. From accessible hardware and software to interactive computer games, this center is designed to help everyone, no matter their needs.

It’s not just a showroom either—it’s a space for brainstorming new ideas and building a more inclusive future.

Google has teamed up with the Pfennigparade Foundation to launch a training program aimed at promoting digital accessibility. They’ll be training 45 people with disabilities to become digital literacy trainers. These trainers will then work with companies and organizations to boost accessibility across Germany.

One of the highlights of the center is a permanent installation: a bronze sculpture of a Google Doodle honoring Oskar Picht, the inventor of the Braille typewriter.

Book a tour and discover all the innovative, inclusive tech on display.

Women’s night taxi vouchers

Except of the awful colors of the taxi’s in Berlin, I really like that there almost all the same and all connected by the colors and taxi signs.

Ladies, Oktoberfest is all about fun—but getting home safely is just as important. That’s why the Safe Space is back at the festival, offering women’s night taxi vouchers (worth €10 apiece) to help you get home without a hitch.

Women as young as 16 may collect three vouchers and use one per taxi ride. Just remember: no men are allowed in the taxi, but your little ones can tag along, you can use these vouchers between 10pm and 6am to make sure your journey ends safely (as in at a residence and not some after-party).

If you’re not at Oktoberfest, don’t worry! You can still grab three vouchers from various spots around Munich, including city libraries, the Bürgerbüro (at Ruppertstraße), and even at Marienplatz.

Just hand your voucher to the taxi driver, and if your fare is under €10, the voucher covers the entire trip.

Price hike for the Deutschlandticket

Starting January 2025, the price of the Deutschlandticket will increase from €49 to €58 per month. While that might make some commuters groan, the transport ministers across Germany agree that this price hike is needed to keep the ticket rolling smoothly.

After all, it still offers unlimited travel on all buses and regional trains, so for many, it's still a steal.

Bavaria originally pushed for an even higher price, but after some back-and-forth between states, they settled on €58. The reason? Revenue shortfalls.

The ticket hasn't quite hit its sales goals and transport companies were feeling the pinch. So, this price adjustment ensures continued service without major disruptions.
