Summer holidays start this Friday – and so does the traffic. The A8, A95, and Fernpass routes are all expected to grind to a halt from Friday afternoon. ADAC recommends leaving early or skipping the first weekend entirely.
Good news for top students: anyone with an "A" on their Bavarian school report can ride any regional train in Bavaria for free on August 3. And anyone under 17 can hop on Bayerische Seenschifffahrt boats on Königssee, Starnberger See, Ammersee, and Tegernsee for free throughout the holidays.

Aldi just turned its car parks into overnight parking
Aldi Süd and the Munich-based tech company Wemolo are opening up 81 parking spaces across six Munich stores for overnight use. Available from 6:30pm to 8:30am Monday to Saturday, and all day on Sundays. Book via the Wemolo app or web using your license plate number.
One night costs €5, seven nights €25, and a full month (30 nights) runs €50. Locations span Berg am Laim, Neuperlach, Trudering, Feldmoching-Hasenbergl, Hadern, and Schwabing-Freimann.
License plate data is checked against bookings and deleted after 24 hours. The scheme already runs in Augsburg, Krefeld, and the Allgäu region – making Munich the latest city to join.

Munich lets you swap apartments and now subsidized housing is included
Munich runs a free city platform where tenants can swap apartments with each other. The idea is straightforward: if your place is too big and someone else's is too small, you trade. Over 1,800 apartments are currently listed.
The process works in five steps: register, post your apartment, find a match, agree on conditions with your landlord, and sign a new lease. The landlord has final say on whether a swap can happen, so there's no legal guarantee.
The latest update expands the platform to include subsidized apartments for the first time. Tenants of social housing owned by Münchner Wohnen can now swap with each other, or with privately financed tenants, as long as eligibility requirements are met.
The family hotel site parents actually need
Alex, a mom of two in Munich, got tired of watching families spend weeks researching hotels, book something, and come home disappointed. Basically, no search engine lets them filter for what actually matters. Whether childcare starts at age 2 or 5, whether dinner works with a 7pm bedtime, whether five people fit in one room.

Thousands of lanterns will soon float across the Olympia Lake
The Water Lantern Festival comes to Olympiapark on August 7 and 8. Decorate your own lantern, write something on it, and set it on the water at 8:30pm as the sun goes down.
The festival runs from 5pm with live music, food, and local craft stalls before the lantern release. The lanterns themselves are made from biodegradable rice paper with LED candles – all collected after the event, along with any other litter in the water.
Tickets start at €28.90 per person and include a lantern kit, markers, and a drawstring bag. A couples’ package runs €30.90 for two and includes a picnic blanket.

All 20 BMW Art Cars are together in Munich for the first time
The BMW Art Car Collection returns to Munich this week for its 50th anniversary. For the first time ever, all 20 cars are shown together in one place at BMW Welt in Milbertshofen, from July 29 to August 31.
Each car was given to an artist with complete creative freedom – the results range from Andy Warhol's M1 to Jeff Koons' M3 GT2 to Olafur Eliasson's hydrogen prototype, which has only been shown publicly three times since 2007.
Entrance to the BMW world is free. However, guided tours run daily in English at 2:30pm for €12. Allow 60 to 90 minutes for the full visit. A digital treasure hunt is also available – scan QR codes on the cars to collect digital cards and unlock a surprise.
