3 bits of news

Wiesn 2025: What to know before Saturday

Munich’s biggest event of the year begins this Saturday, when the Mayor taps the first keg at Theresienwiese. Millions of visitors are expected over the next two weeks, and with that comes excitement and some challenges.

This year brings some digital upgrades – from an app that discreetly alerts security in the tents to MVV’s new Web2Wallet ticket that lets you skip paper tickets altogether. Find more about these 2 apps:

Safety in the tents: Two additional tents now support an app, SafeNow, that lets visitors call for help within seconds during an emergency. If something happens inside a tent, guests can send a discreet alert to security staff. For first-time visitors or parents heading to the Wiesn with teens, this is an app worth downloading. This year's emergency app can be used in the following tents: Armbrustschützenzelt, Hofbräu Festzelt, Ochsenbraterei and Schottenhamel Festhalle.

  • Getting there: MVV is testing Web2Wallet tickets, which allow you to buy your ride online and drop it straight into your phone’s wallet – no paper or app needed. A smoother option for anyone who gets overwhelmed during Oktoberfest.

We’re wishing you all a fun and hopefully peaceful Wiesn season.

Munich votes on Olympics

Should Munich make a bid to host the Olympics again? The city is putting that question directly to residents. Starting this week, referendum documents are being mailed out across Munich.

Supporters argue that the Games could bring global attention and infrastructure investment, while critics warn of high costs and large crowds. It’s worth noting: Munich already hosted the Summer Olympics in 1972, and that incredible legacy is still visible in Olympiapark.

Around 1 million EU citizens living in Munich are eligible to vote, with documents being mailed out from September 17. You will be eligible to vote if you fit the following criteria:

  • 18 years old on election day

  • Have German or EU citizenship

  • Have lived in Munich for at least two months (in case of multiple residences, primary residence has to be Munich)

All voters automatically receive postal voting papers – no application needed. If you’re eligible to vote, your decision will shape whether Munich even puts its name in the ring. The referendum, in which Munich residents will vote, will take place on October 26, 2025.

Polls from early summer show two-thirds in favor and one-third against.

Recycling Cabinet goes on tour

Most of us have stuff lying around that we don’t really use – an old lamp, a spare phone charger or the bike pump you accidentally ordered twice. Wouldn’t it be nice to give those things another life? No hassle, no uploading to eBay, just an easy drop-off on your way to the library.

Munich’s Recycling Cabinet, part of the city’s Re:think Munich campaign, has the solution. The cabinet, as they call it, is a drop off location for items you don’t need anymore. You will find this cabinet at the city libraries.

The first stop is at the Schwabing City Library (September 16 – October 30). At each location, it will stay for a total of six weeks – giving you plenty of time to declutter and repurpose.

Here’s how it works: bring in everyday objects that still work but you don’t need anymore, and drop them in the cabinet. Or browse what others have left and take something home – no swapping required except for books and clothing.

After Schwabing, the cabinet will move on to other libraries across Munich:

  • Hasenbergl (Oct 30–Dec 15)

  • Neuhausen (Dec 16–Jan 2, 2026)

  • Milbertshofen (Feb 3–Mar 16, 2026)

  • Ramersdorf (Mar 17–Apr 30, 2026)

Think of it as Munich’s version of a neighborhood treasure chest – minus the wrinkled newspaper and old socks. Not only is it a fun initiative but every swap saves resources and reduces waste – small steps toward the city’s climate goals.

A circus full of magic

From October 24 to December 7, Munich’s Werksviertel-Mitte will have a little more magic to it. Circus Roncalli is coming to town and pitching its tent for 65 shows. Known worldwide for its artistry and modern take on circus, it uses light, music, and acrobatics to create the spectacle.

This year’s theme, ARTistART, takes inspiration from icons like Keith Haring, Frida Kahlo, Picasso, and Toulouse-Lautrec, blending visual art with breathtaking stunts. The program has it all – acrobats, dancers, clowns, an illusionist, jugglers, with a live orchestra and plenty of surprises in between.

It’s the perfect activity to enjoy with friends and family. Tickets usually sell fast, so best not to wait.

Odeonsplatz turns into Bavaria’s biggest farmers’ market

On Sunday, September 28, Odeonsplatz will transform from city square to Bavaria’s biggest farmers’ market. More than 100 regional producers are rolling in – bringing in cheese, meats, fresh fruit and vegetables among many other delicacies.

It’s not just your typical farmer’s market, it’s a whole experience. Kids get bouncy castles and face paint, adults get live tunes – and everyone gets a closer look at how their food is made. This year’s extra treat at the Bauernmarktmeile is the Cheese Gourmet Market in the Schmuckhof of the Bavarian Ministry of Agriculture. And when your shopping bag (and stomach) need a break, grab a spot in the Biergarten, snack on regional treats, and people-watch as Odeonsplatz turns into one long, delicious mile.

It’s one of those rare Sundays where you can eat your way through half of Bavaria without leaving the Altstadt.

MAUI – Hawaiian Kitchen and Bar

When all the Bier and Hendl start to weigh you down, Maui is the antidote. With two spots in Munich – one in Ludwigpalais and one at Rotkreuzplatz – it mixes Hawaiian and Vietnamese flavors in the best way.

We went for the mango duck salad and the spicy lemongrass beef, and both were spot on. The salad was fruity and light, while the beef had exactly the kick we were craving. The staff was warm and welcoming, and even steered us toward the beef when we asked for something with a bit of heat – a recommendation we were highly grateful for.

Veggie eaters won’t feel left out, as they have a selection of delicious vegetarian dishes too.

Inside, the decor leans tropical without trying too hard – wooden accents, warm lighting, and a touch of island flair that makes you forget you’re just a few steps from Odeonsplatz. Portions are generous, prices fair, and it’s the kind of place you immediately tell your friends about.
