3 bits of news

Get paid to go green

Yes, really. If you ride your bike, take the tram, or even cut down on water at home, you could be earning rewards. Munich just joined the Klima-Taler network, a national app that turns climate-friendly habits into real-life perks.

Think free event tickets, discounts, or even a free pass to the Rathaus tower.

It’s simple. You download the Klima-Taler app, join the Landeshauptstadt München team, and start collecting coins.

Every 5 kg of CO₂ you save equals one Taler. Then you trade them in at shops, restaurants, and cultural spots across town.

From now until June 30, users can also enter a drawing to win a bike, a helmet, or even a backpack made from ocean plastic.

S-Bahn closures in June

If you’re staying in town over the Pfingstferien, brace yourself. From Friday, June 6 to Wednesday, June 18, big changes are coming to the S-Bahn. A new electronic signal box at Ostbahnhof is going live. The installation is no small feat and it comes with major closures and delays.

Starting Friday night, June 6 at 10:30pm until 5am Saturday, June 7, the main S-Bahn line shuts down completely between Pasing and Riem, Giesing, Trudering and Johanneskirchen.

From Saturday, June 7 to Friday, June 13, the shutdown shifts location and will mainly affect the Ostbahnhof area. Trains around Isartor, Giesing, Trudering, Riem and Johanneskirchen will be limited. Buses between Isartor and Ostbahnhof will run every 5 minutes.

From Friday, June 13 to Wednesday, June 18, trains slowly return, but many lines will still have fewer trips than normal. The S1 and S5 skip the main line, and some booster trains (amplifier trips) still won’t run. Things start getting back to normal on Monday, June 16, and by Thursday, June 19, full service should be back.

Munich breaks into top 20 for Global Tech

Turns out, we’ve got more than just good beer and beautiful mountains.

Munich just ranked #17 in the 2025 Global Tech Ecosystem Index, making it the only German city in the global top 20. Out of 288 cities across 69 countries, we’re one of the few European hubs holding it down.

What does that mean?

Basically, Munich’s killing it in tech. From startups and patents to VC funding and spin-offs from top universities, we’re competing with big players like Seattle and Beijing and beating them in density.

Munich ranked 5th in the world for innovation output relative to size.

More tech means more jobs, more talent, and more action. It’s good news if you live here and even better if you’re a brand looking to connect with a fast-growing, forward-thinking crowd.

Startups need lunch spots. Developers need great coffee. Investors notice where the buzz is.

Mark your calendar: on Saturday and Sunday, June 14–15, Munich turns 867. And like every proper Munich birthday bash, it’s not a quiet one.

From Odeonsplatz to Sendlinger Straße, the whole old town transforms into a buzzing adventure mile packed with food, live music, street performers, city tours, and even drag queens and royalty.

Want to kick off the weekend right?

Head to Marienplatz at 11:15am on Saturday for the opening ceremony. There’s brass bands, firecrackers and dancing. The whole event runs both days, with each area offering its own flavor literally and culturally.

Where to Go, What to Do

  • Marienplatz: Main stage, beer garden, Weißwurst breakfast, drag meets Bavarian royalty, live music from 10:30am to 10pm.

  • Wittelsbacherplatz: Ferris wheel, open-air dancing, sound installations made from recycled junk (yes, that’s a boot flute).

  • Odeonsplatz: Carnival rides, craftsman village with workshops, and live street art.

  • Sendlinger Straße & Rindermarkt: 100+ handcrafted goods vendors and a chill zone with music and deckchairs.

  • Alter Hof: Kids’ program about life along the Isar, including cooking, crafts and bracelet-making.

And if you’re up for learning something too, join the free city tours. They run hourly both days, with special themed walks about queens, rebels and trailblazing women in Munich’s past.

It all kicks off at 11am with a laid-back coffee vibe outside Erlöserkirche on Ungererstraße. At 11:45, the music starts. By noon, it’s go-time, as the group sets off for the “benedetta stagione” ride, with a full police escort, of course.

Expect a colorful crowd, some vintage rides and even a musical pitstop at the Peace Angel.

Even if you don’t ride, this is the kind of event that makes our city feel so alive. Great photo ops, good coffee and a feel-good route through town. Plus, it’s free to join, just shoot an email to the organizer asap if you want to take part today.

1 new restaurant/café to try

Morning Bliss

Let’s talk about the kind of café you wish you had around the corner. Morning Bliss just popped up on Corneliusstraße and it’s already becoming a local favorite.

If you’re into top-tier matcha, freshly baked croissants and cozy spots to chill or catch up with a friend, this one’s for you.

We dropped by this week, and here’s the deal: the matcha is smooth and not overly sweet (finally), the coffee is excellent, and those pistachio croissants? Wildly good.

If you’re a fan of new flavors, don’t miss the cronuts with ricotta and rocket, a weird combo, but it works.

What you’ll love at Morning Bliss

  • Mango Matcha that actually tastes like mango

  • Creamy, fresh pistachio croissants

  • Sourdough bread that hits the spot
