Welcome back to the Munich Post! The purpose of this newsletter is to share: 3 bits of news, 2 upcoming events, and 1 amazing restaurant/café for expats living in and around Munich. This way, you have a pulse on what’s going on without scrolling through thousands of pages.

Here’s what we’ve got for you this week:

We’re approaching the first week of Wiesn and if you still haven’t been, here are 3 things you need to know before your visit:

  • No balloons on S-Bahns: They might look cute, but balloons and overhead lines are a dangerous mix. That’s why they are banned on S-Bahn platforms. Nobody wants their Peppa Pig balloon to knock out the trains.

  • No strollers on Saturdays and on the Oct 3 public holiday: On other days, they’re allowed until 6pm. If you’re bringing kids, the trick is to go early in the day or leave the stroller at home.

  • Last Family Day is on Tuesday, Sept 30: If you’re going with kids, this is the perfect day. Until 7pm, rides and stands across the Wiesn cut prices – meaning fewer euros disappear from your wallet between the carousel and the cotton candy. Check out the full list of discounts here

3 bits of news

Lidl joins the Sunday fun

Sundays in Munich are usually reserved for church bells, brunch, and realizing you forgot to buy milk. But the rules are bending: the new Lidl at Hackerbrücke now opens on Sundays. That means actual groceries, not just chips from the kiosk.

It joins the very short VIP list of Sunday lifesavers:

  • Edeka – Arnulfstraße 2 (near Hauptbahnhof), 8am–11pm

  • dm – Orleansplatz 10-12 (Ostbahnhof), 6:30am–11pm

  • Edeka – Orleansplatz 10-12 (Ostbahnhof), 8am–11pm

  • Rewe – Terminalstraße Mitte 18 (Munich Airport), 5:30am–10pm

And if you’re one of those last-minute shoppers, Munich has got your back too:

  • LateBird in Pasing is a 24/7, automated supermarket where your groceries slide out on a conveyor belt like luggage at the airport

  • Ben and Bred with their 2 central locations makes sure you have access to all essentials, including toothpaste before your Sunday date

  •  E-Kiosk 24 and their various locations all over Munich prove that even kiosks can pull all-nighters

Public Transport updates you actually need

Bad news first: the Deutschlandticket climbs to €63 from €58 in January 2026. Yep, another hike. Not exactly the news commuters wanted, but at least you’ve got time to budget for it before the new year. Here’s to hoping the extra euros buy fewer delays – okay, back to reality now.

Something more helpful: Munich S-Bahn now shows real-time crowding. Translation: you can check how packed a train is before stepping on – a blessing if you’ve got a stroller, a bike, or just don’t feel like being pressed into someone’s puffy jacket. Crowd levels show up on a light system: green means space, yellow is filling, red signals a tight space.

And for families, a small win: from Jan 1, 2026, kids (ages ?-?) ride FREE with a Single Day Ticket. Buy one as an adult, and take your kid along without paying extra.

Not all upgrades are fun, but at least now you can see the sardine-can train before you’re inside it.

Love Munich? Become a Guide

(We know some of you started loving Munich because of this newsletter)

If you’ve ever found yourself explaining why surfers ride a wave in the Englischer Garten or why no building in Munich is taller than the Frauenkirche’s twin domes, here’s your chance to make it official. Munich Tourism is now accepting applications for its official tour guide training course, starting in March 2026.

The program isn’t just a hobby club – it’s the city’s gold standard. Around 200 freelance guides already work with Munich Tourism, leading tours in 25 languages for visitors from all over the world. The new course runs in two blocks: March–June (with a midterm exam that lets you start guiding in the Old Town and Nymphenburg Park) and October–November (with the final certification). Expect excursions to museums, training in history, communication skills, even conflict management.

It’s a serious time commitment. Classes run Monday to Thursday for up to 7 hours a day. By the end you’ll have clocked about 450 hours of study and practice, topped off with both written and practical exams. Pass the tests, and you’ll walk away with the BVGD 2 certificate, a shiny city badge, and the chance to be booked through Munich Tourism.

What you need to bring: a passion for Munich, fluency in at least one language (French and Chinese are especially sought after this round), and the charm to keep a group entertained in the rain.

Pumpkins with an artsy twist

Just northwest of Munich, Hofgut Sickertshofen is once again turning into a stage for autumn’s most photogenic crop. This weekend, the historic estate hosts Kunst & Kürbis – a festival where pumpkins aren’t just soup or decoration but part of an open-air art exhibition.

Over three days, around eighty exhibitors fill the estate with installations, sculptures, and culinary experiments. Picture pumpkin towers, colorful gourds arranged like mosaics, and enough food stalls to keep both sweet and savory cravings satisfied. There’s also live music, a maize labyrinth, and pumpkin carving for kids – making it a family-friendly outing that doesn’t feel like the usual farm market. Even dogs on leashes are welcome, so no one has to stay home.

It’s part art show, part harvest fair, and entirely a celebration of autumn. Whether you’re there to stock up on seasonal flavors, snap photos next to oversized gourds, or simply wander the estate’s beautiful grounds, Sickertshofen gives you an excuse to trade the city for a day of countryside charm.

An art playground opens in Munich

If your kids have ever complained that there’s nothing to do, bring them to KUNSTLABOR 2 in Maxvorstadt. This week, the center turns into a living, breathing art playground with an interactive exhibition by French street artist Seth that blends sculpture, murals, fantasy, and play.

Seth’s Spiel(T)Räume concept: jump through rainbow tunnels, peek through mural windows, tiptoe through imaginative scenes drawn from childhood dreams. His art invites you to step in rather than stay behind the ropes. It’s immersive, expressive and designed for everyone from toddlers to grandparents.

Even if you don’t have any kids yourself, this is still a wonderful exhibition to experience. As Seth says: I want this exhibition to be a journey to our inner child, a world of wonder where anything is possible.

1 new restaurant/café to try

Fairfax Express

If your brain says salad but your soul says burger, Fairfax Express at the Munich Market Fat Cat in Gasteig is the answer. Fried chicken sandwiches, tenders, and good old American comfort food – all done beautifully, with house hot sauces and local chicken.

We tried the Classic smash burger, the Nashville hot and the Fried Mac ‘n’ Cheese balls and I have to say, if you’re a fan of the heat, nothing beats the Nashville Hot. It’s simple, spicy and perfectly done, and really — what else makes a good burger?

It’s counter service and card payments only, no reservations and no cash — but the quality makes up for the no-frills setup.
