This Sunday, May 11, is Mother’s Day. So if you haven’t already planned something sweet for the mom in your life, this is your gentle nudge.

The S-Bahn Stammstrecke will be shut down between Pasing and Leuchtenbergring / Giesing from Friday, May 9 (10:20pm) to Monday, May 12 (4:40am). All lines except the S7 will be affected and trains will be rerouted or stop earlier than usual. So if you’re heading out with mom or commuting over the weekend, check before you go.

3 bits of news

New Chancellor, rocky start

Germany’s new chancellor, Friedrich Merz, just scraped through to power, but only on the second try.

His first vote in parliament flopped after a surprise rebellion from within his own coalition. It was the first time in post-war history that a chancellor candidate failed an initial Bundestag vote.

Not exactly the strong start you want when you’re stepping in to lead Europe’s biggest economy.

Eventually, Merz pulled through with a narrow majority of 325 votes out of 630. His team of 17 ministers is now sworn in, and a new chapter begins.

The SPD, his coalition partner, insists they’re committed. But the early cracks raise a big question: how stable is this so-called “stable government”?

With an economy just crawling out of a recession and international eyes watching closely, Merz doesn’t have much room to wobble.

If this much drama unfolded just getting him elected, it may be a sign of what we can expect going forward.

What do you think – is this coalition built to last?

More tables for local residents

Getting a table at Oktoberfest can feel like a competitive sport.

But good news: if you live in Munich, your chances just got better. This year, a new rule is setting aside 10% of seats for locals even after 3pm.

You won’t need to pre-buy a load of vouchers either, just book online, add your address, and you’re good to go.

This could mean nearly 100,000 extra spots reservable across weekends and on the holiday on October 3. And it might also keep the tents a little more lively, since holding a free seat all day might get harder.

In other Wiesn news, the beloved Herzkasperlzelt won’t be making a comeback to the Oide Wiesn in 2025. Once again, the bid went to the Schöniger family’s Boandlkramerei tent, scoring just one point more in the city’s competitive tent application process.

Retailers are now allowed to sell official Oktoberfest rain ponchos. That means fewer umbrellas poking strangers inside already-packed tents and fewer soggy seats.

Fingers crossed we won’t need them, but it’s Munich.

Want coffee in the sun?

You know the feeling, spring hits, and suddenly every seat in the sun is taken.

Now, there’s an easy way to find the sunny spots without wandering the streets or guessing by shadows. The free SunSeekr map shows you, in real time, which cafes and restaurants are currently soaking up sunshine.

All you have to do is enter “Munich” or your current location, and bam, you’ll see where the sun is shining right now. You can even scroll through the day to plan your lunch break or late afternoon espresso.

Free Dance Nights Return

This is my newest series. So far each shoot has been an exhilarating and unique experience. Unlike a lot of my studio based work, SunChasing is an exercise in surrender. We get together very early in the morning, drive around the sleepy city and wait for the Universe to show us the path. We chase the sun and look for that perfect moment when the light and the shadow intertwine in a magical dance. The city is our canvas and together we create something special.

Tanzen im Park has just kicked off its 5th season, and trust us, this one’s going to be fun: Two parks, two nights a week, and a mix of dances that’ll take you around the world without ever leaving Munich.

Here’s how it works: every Tuesday evening in Ostpark and every Friday in Westpark, pro dancers will lead free dance sessions.

No need to register, no pressure, just show up and move. The vibe? Think salsa, hip hop, jazz, Indian, Greek, Ukrainian, flamenco even Bavarian line dancing.

Where and When

  • Ostpark (Tuesdays, 7–8pm) – on the gymnastics meadow by the lake

  • Westpark (Fridays, 7:15–8:15pm) – west part of the park, same grassy setup

  • Check the schedule at tanzenimpark.de by 5pm on event days to confirm it’s still happening (rain might cancel it).

A 90-minute cultural escape

Ever wondered if we can really control our own destiny? NatyaFest 2025 says… maybe not, but we can definitely dance about it.

On Sunday, May 25, Gasteig becomes the stage for DESTINY—an Indian dance-theater spectacle with live world music that dives into themes like power, ego, greed, and ultimately freedom.

It’s an evening full of rich storytelling, mythical turns, and movement that speaks louder than words—And a rare opportunity to see India’s celebrated Guru Dr. Vasundhara Doraswamy live.

This event blends classical Indian dance with world music and fresh choreography and will be joined by talented dancers from Germany.

While East meets West, tradition meets today, and it all happens in 90 unforgettable minutes.
