3 bits of news
Gollierplatz gets a facelift
Schwanthalerhöhe just got a summer upgrade. In a city filled with never-ending Baustellen, there's finally good news for families in the Westend: Gollierplatz’s brand-new playground is officially open. The long-awaited refresh brings a splash of color and activity to the neighborhood, transforming a tired corner into a lively community hub.
Water features are the star of the show, making it the perfect spot to cool off during Munich’s hotter afternoons. Whether your kids are into climbing, splashing, or just digging in the sand, there’s something here for every age group. Adults can kick back on nearby benches or join in a game at the adjacent boules court.
So pack a picnic and enjoy the laid-back vibe – or take a short walk to one of the excellent ice cream spots nearby. It's a great weekend hangout, even if you don't have little ones in town.

Big Business, Big Bucks: Germany’s €63 Billion bet on the future
Germany’s economy may be facing headwinds, but major companies are still betting big on the country’s future. At a high-profile investment summit in Berlin this week, leading firms, including tech giants and energy players, pledged a whopping €63 billion in long-term projects.
The goal? To modernize infrastructure, accelerate green tech, and reinforce Germany’s role as an innovation powerhouse. Chancellor Friedrich Merz called the investments a “vote of confidence” in Germany’s potential, even as the country wrestles with sluggish growth.
For expats in Munich, this means more than just headlines. Think: expanded job opportunities, cleaner energy, and faster digital infrastructure over the next few years.
Tip for newcomers: Keep an eye on hiring trends in sustainability, IT, and engineering—this investment wave could unlock some exciting career moves.

Life-Saving in Action: Munich's First Aid Day
Munich is hosting its fourth annual Tag der Ersten Hilfe on Saturday, July 26, from 11am to 4pm. Organized by the city’s Gesundheitsreferat with support from Mayor Dieter Reiter, the event brings lifesaving skills to the public at eight locations, including Marienplatz, Rotkreuzplatz, and Münchner Freiheit.
Visitors can learn and practice essential techniques from heart compressions on practice manikins to using automated external defibrillators (AEDs). A highlight for families: a Teddy Bear Hospital at Marienplatz where kids can explore first aid through play.
Why it matters: each year in Germany, more than 120,000 people suffer cardiac arrest outside hospitals, yet only around 10 % survive. Local authorities hope this hands-on experience, plus the city's Mobile Retter responder program, will boost emergency response times across Munich. No prior experience required to attend.

365 years of florals & festivities
Do you have a green thumb? Every year on the first Tuesday in August, Munich’s gardeners and florists take center stage in one of the city’s most charming traditions: the Gärtnerjahrtag.
Dating back to a 17th-century guild charter, the festival starts with a band concert at Viktualienmarkt, followed by a vibrant parade of horse‑drawn floats, tractors, Blasmusik, and thousands of blooms marching through the heart of the old town.
The procession leads to a solemn “Vielen Dank” service in the Alter Peter church at around 11:30 am, to honor Gertrud of Nivelles, the patron saint of gardeners.
Afterwards, the festivity continues at the Hofbräuhaus, complete with speeches, local music, and, of course, generous flower and produce giveaways to crowd members.

1 new restaurant/café to try
Coup de Coeur by Mona John
If you’re looking for a restaurant with French flair, a hint of Michelin-star quality, and reasonable prices, look no further than Mona John’s Coup de Coeur. This little gem tucked away on the north-west corner near Theriesienwiese offers an intimate French-inspired bistro experience with just around 16 seats.
Chef-owner Mona John was born in Munich, but trained in Nantes and Paris and launched her restaurant after a “cooking for neighbours” project during the pandemic. Her restaurant’s name reflects her culinary philosophy: each dish aims to spark a coup de cœur - a moment of delight at first bite.
The menu is small but refined: three rotating midday mains (meat, fish, and vegetarian) with two desserts, and dishes crafted with fresh regional and French ingredients.
The open kitchen, friendly service, ever‑changing menu, and thoughtful wine pairings add to its charm. It’s perfect for a quiet lunch or a romantic dinner.
