Here’s our weekly roundup:

This Friday, August 15 is a holiday – which means shops are closed, but if you’ve still got the urge to splurge, head over to Olympiapark, where the Selfmade market – full of handmade ceramics, jewellery, clothes – has the kind of finds you convince yourself are gifts (but secretly keep).

Feeling creative? You can join the arts & crafts workshops and make something of your own. Check the schedule of workshops here.

Bonus: Grab a bite to eat afterwards from one of the food stalls and relax on the great lawn.

3 bits of news

Maxvorstadt Spätis told: No beer, no chips after 10pm

That midnight beer or chip run in Maxvorstadt? Over. Starting this month, late-night kiosks in the district must stop selling alcohol after 10 pm – and bizarrely, chips too. This decision comes after complaints from residents and in order to reduce noise and street drinking in the neighborhood.

For students and night owls, this means either adjusting your routine or stocking up earlier. Some are criticising this action and calling it an overstep that punishes everyone for a few noisy nights. While supporters are in agreement that residents deserve their sleep.

While it’s a tough break for Maxvorstadt’s Späti owners, the silver lining for Munich’s night crowd is that the ban hasn’t hit spots around Leopoldstraße yet – so your late-night beer and snack run is still safe… for now.

Join the ‘More Green’ competition

Tired of that sad, gray street corner you walk past every day? The city’s Mehr Grün competition is your chance to fix it. Since 1974, the city has been inviting residents to pitch projects that make Munich leafier. Think rooftop gardens, wildflower patches, cute playgrounds or a courtyard that actually makes you want to hang out there.

The best ideas don’t just win bragging rights. There’s prize money (up to 1,200 €) and an award ceremony to celebrate. The competition is held every two years and submissions are open from now until June 2026.

For inspiration, take a look at the winners from 2023 and 2024 in the categories of outdoor design, space design, courtyard design, personal achievements, and child-friendly living environment.

Old cinema gets a new script

For half a year, the grand old cinema at Sendlinger Tor has sat silent but not anymore. A group of friends already known for their Plex bars have taken over the former cinema’s foyer.

They’re not just turning it into another café but plan a lively mix of coffee, matcha and short films. The Plex founders say their goal is to attract a young crowd while honoring the place’s cinematic roots. But don’t expect a grand revival as the actual theater is still locked away behind a barrier. For now, only the foyer will be open during this one-year interim.

A real estate developer is working on a long-term plan, but between monument protection laws and millions in renovation costs, the cinema’s fate is still very much in limbo.

Second-hand Trachten market

Munich’s Wiesn Zeit is coming up, and if your Dirndl or Lederhosen feels snug or too worse for wear, head to the Second-hand Trachtenmarkt. It’s packed with pre-loved gems that cost a lot less than the department stores and tourist shops and have more personality than anything fresh off the rack. Who knows, you might just find the traditional costume of your dreams.

If you can’t make it to this one, check out this list of Trachten flea markets here.

Taverne Cyclades

Sometimes Munich feels a little too far from the sea. Enter Taverne Cyclades, a cosy Greek taverna in Neuhausen where the lamb chops are smoky and tender, the feta is fresh, and the staff is very friendly. The menu delivers authentic Greek charm that you won’t forget any time soon.

They’ve got plenty of hits here – crispy zucchini fritters, slow-baked briam, tender calamari, and fries that are clearly cut in-house. But if you really want to win dinner, order the mixed grill platter: smoky souvlaki, juicy lamb, and hearty sides that are bound to be a crowd pleaser.

Tip: It’s best to make a reservation, especially if you’re going as a group because the secret is out and this place gets quite full.
